Idiocracy Is a Cruel Movie

and You Should Be Ashamed for Liking It
quote:
Remember that 2006 movie Idiocracy? The one where Luke Wilson plays an average underachiever who wakes up 500 years in the future, only to realize that he's now the smartest person on Earth? And everyone else is dumb — like, really dumb? Well, that movie is cruel and terrible and you should be ashamed for liking it. Seriously.
quote:
We're frustrated by the world, believing that encouraging smarter people to breed would somehow fix our problems. But it simply isn't so. It's a distraction from the institutional problems of our society. The problem isn't that stupid people (again, read: poor) are having too many children. The problem is that we aren't living up to the ideals and promises we've given to each generation of Americans that have come before us. A livable wage, paid maternity leave, proper funding of scientific research — these are the things a functional, civilized society are built upon; the ways that we can improve our world. We don't build a better society by getting more smart people to frick each other.

Liberalistas really hate it when they are called out on the truth of what their actions will truly do to us.

What people don't understand about the movie Idiocracy was that it really was not a movie about the future but about the present couched in the future. A lot of sci-fi and fantasy does this, Soviet authors were famous for critiquing the communist system by trying to hide their satire in sci-fi.
Obviously this future kommisar doesn't really get it.

They know exactly what they are doing. They are creating a voting machine stocked full of idiots and sheeple.

Stopped reading there. That is absolutely THE problem. I'd bet that 90% of our society's problems would be fixed by not allowing stupid and poor people to have kids.

It is definitely happening. Even though the world itself is shifting towards having less kids, even in places like India, it is a problem. The more intelligent of us tend to be career driven and plan out our kids. The less intelligent tend to screw away and pop out as many babies as they can slip by the goalie. Even though wealth and intelligence tend to go hand in hand, my bank account doesn't tell me where to stick my cock.

You certainly don't get it by dumb people fricking each other...

Idiocracy = LSU fans tonight.

The origin story for Idiocracy's future world of half-wits is that uneducated people in the early 2000s are having kids and smart people don't reproduce enough. It's clear from the film that the intelligent people are wealthy, while the uneducated people are poor. So we're starting from a position of believing that wealthy people are inherently more intelligent and, by extension, deserve their wealth. This link between intelligence and wealth is perhaps the most dangerous idea of the film and pretty quickly slips into advocating for some form of soft eugenics to build a better world.
I think it's hilarious when people play dumb to the fact the there is a correlation between intelligence and money making potential. Is it a perfect rule with no exceptions? Absolutely not. If your dumb as a lamppost and have 6 kids though, chances are you are broke as well.

I found this quote pretty telling.
First of all, this is neither dangerous nor is it an just an idea (i.e., conjecture); it has been empirically verified time and time again so it has a strong theoretical foundation.
Besides general intelligence, emotional intelligence, motivation/work-ethic, and many other variables, including some randomness, are all related to positive life outcomes. And although IQ is one of, if not the single biggest predictor, there are so many other variables that one can positively manipulate to their advantage (e.g., motivation and work-ethic). Acknowledging what we can change and what we can't, then maximizing what we can, is an important step to success.
Even then, if this author recognized the fallacy in his logic and science in general, he would know that the notion that the relationship between these outcomes and intelligence is a population level phenomenon; we can't assume that we can definitively generalize that to the individual (i.e., Ecological Fallacy).
Simply put, there are likely many examples of indivudals with an IQ of 80 that were more successfully than some with an IQ of 120. Therefore, it would be wrong to take a random individual with an IQ of 80 and say that they can't be as successful as a random individual with an IQ of 120. We can, however, more confidently infer that, the entire population of 120s, as an aggregate, will have a better life outcomes (wealth being one) than the 80s, as an aggregate.
So instead of denying research and calling concepts "dangerous" he should take more time to understand the research, the concepts, and the true implications of both.

This is kind of timely as I have started rewatching True Detective this week (I figure most have seen it since it's LA based). Anyways, I'm probably not completely accurate with my details and I don't want to make this religious in any ways. Anyways, in the episode I was watching earlier tonight, Rust (Mathew McConaughey) and Marty (Woody Harrelson) end up at tent revival. Rust (not religious) mockingly wonders out loud what the general IQ is of the worshipers. Marty calls him out for being presumptuous (possibly because Rust in not religious); however, Rust points out that they are disproportionately obese, their clothes look worn (probably poor), and are likely giving the little money they have away to the church.
What Marty failed to see at first, much like the author of this article (albeit Marty's was probably somewhat due to Rusts previous speeches on faith, as a group (obviously some people do have bad luck), their generally poor physical well-being and financial state combined with their somewhat self-defeating behaviors (not improving either) is likely, at least somewhat indicative of some sort of cognitive deficits.

But I thought they were practicing eugenics through the holocaust of aborted black babies?
