This quote from Trump is getting a lot of play in the leftist media today:
quote:

We’ve begun preparing to repeal and replace Obamacare. Obamacare is a disaster, folks. It’s a disaster. You can say, “Oh, Obamacare!” — They fill up our rallies with people that, you wonder how they get there, but they’re not the Republican people that the representatives are representing.

Here's an example of the spin

Long story short, the people who are taking to the streets to shout "Not my president" are now complaining that Trump let a big secret out of the bag, namely that Republican representatives only represent the people who voted for them.

Politics aside, in a representative democracy/republic, whom do the representatives represent? Those who put them in office, or every single citizen in their district?

Trump is the President of all of us, even people like me who didn't vote for him.

US Reps and US Senators represent their districts, their states, and the nation at large. They represent all their constituents and not just their donors and voters.

Yeah, that's a valid criticism. Trump's ego and "winning" theme are over the top.

He's still better than Hillary, and he's turning out to be better than I thought he would be - vis-a-vis his actions and not his rhetoric.

The represent everyone in their district, just as Trump represents everyone in the country.

It is hypocritical to scream "not my president" then get mad about him not doing the things you want or doing things you don't want.

In the book world - everyone

In the real world - special interest that funded the campaign

1. Donors
2. Constituents from their party
3. Party
4. Constituents not from their party
5. US citizens

Reality is probably closer to that, with 1 and 2 being interchangeable depending on the issue.

All that may be true but it doesn't mean they have to support or vote in favor of legislation that their opposition wants but the people who voted for them don't want.

In theory, their entire district. In practice, don't try calling your local rabid dem rep's office if you're a Republican voter (ask me how I know). Sad but true!

Y'all are really missing the obvious, irrefutable, paramount, important point here:

quote:

Obamacare is a disaster, folks. It’s a disaster.

Focus on important stuff.

They represent the wishes of the district, the voters of the district, and that means in all likelihood the people who voted for them.

Is this a serious question? They represent their constituents, whether they wish to accept that or not.

You are supposed to represent everyone but the reality is they really only represent the ones who voted them in office. You cannot please everyone but a good politician should be in touch with all people he represents and pick his/her battles. Know what issues the majority will not cave on and know which issues are ok to compromise or vote with the opposition on to throw them a bone. It's all about balance
