Hard To Believe We Live In A Nation In Which Fiscal Responsibility...

is now considered a negative (and can get you called a racist), and in which the political party that is hell bent on spending more (all things being relative) is the "winner" of political debate.

At what point does it all crumble? We cannot continue kicking the can down the road, maxing out credit cards and taking out new lines of credit to cover those we have already maxed out.

What kind of timeframe are we looking at...20 years, 50 years?

I think 20 years is not out of the question. I would be seriously shocked if we were able to hang on another 50.

Right about when Reid, Pelosi, etc. become compost.

It is not hard to believe at all:

New Deal + Great Society + insane immigration policies starting in the 1960s + 50 years of public education controlled by teachers unions = teeming masses of complete dumbasses voting Democrat.

We arent that far away. The debt will continue to grow. We're closing in on the point where we cannot service it by growing our economy. At that point it's hopeless. The next two elections (2014, 2016) will seal our fate.

ETA: Read this wrong but my below statement still holds true in general.

As much as it pains me to say this, that isn't close to being true. You take Pelosi out, Reid out, Obama out, etc. it won't make a hill of beans. The problem is not individuals. The problem is leftism and the leftism epidemic we have in this country now. You need a whole change in culture in order to alter the current path we are on.

I was referring to mostly older politicians (baby boomer and older) not going to be alive (thus not giving a frick) when the whole thing comes down.

ETA: Saw your edit. You're correct as well.

Creating circumstances in which the future is uncertain (by waiting until the last minute to raise the debt ceiling) only discourages growth in the economy. And thanks to the shutdown, many businesses are unable to function normally.

The chief economist of Moody's said today that the best thing the government could do after this debt limit and shutdown crisis over is "nothing, absolutely nothing"--simply to create a period in which business owners know exactly what to expect, and can grow their businesses without concern over whether the government was going to frick things up.

It's not really that hard to believe when most people don't have any personal responsibility why are we surprised that they don't care about the government having any fiscal responsibility?

Even if they're fricking things up long-term?

Liberals live in a utopia.

They will learn when it all crashes down. And because they aren't prepared for it, they will suffer the most.

All we need to do is SPEND A LOT MORE and go into MORE DEBT. Paul Krugman told me so and he won a Noble Prize for Economics.

re: Hard To Believe We Live In A Nation In Which Fiscal Responsibility...
Problem is that it is completely rational to act in a fiscally irresponsible way. If you can push off the problem to another generation and get either the spending you want (liberals) or the tax cuts you want (conservatives) and someone else has to deal with it; why not?

It's immoral and long-term it's unsustainable, but completely rational.

Until you fix this (by a balanced budget amendment) it doesn't matter who the individual politicians are.

Debt ceiling and government default deadlines are not the times to be holding that debate. You don't shut down the government and sabotage the global economy just because you couldn't get your way on a spending bill.

In other words, it was not "fiscally responsible" to threaten to turn this country into a deadbeat.

re: Hard To Believe We Live In A Nation In Which Fiscal Responsibility...
Many in this nation falsely believe that free markets are bad for poor people. In other words, many have an absolutely insane paternalistic view of the poor. Also, many have this belief in a false part history before these programs came about. There is a growing trend in this country in which people despise the idea that services have to cost money.
