but I doubt that her hard drive was the only place in the system that stored the emails.

Hard drives only store the backups (in Outlook it's a .pst file), but they are inevitably on the server as they have to reference those emails periodically. I highly doubt an agency like the IRS would only have one backup.....on a laptop of all things, yet the NSA has server racks a mile long.

Someone should bring conspiracy charges against the whole lot.

The IRS was able to recover 24,000 emails that related to Lerner by searching other peoples' email systems and including an "earlier 2011 data collection of Ms. Lerner's email." But the whole set, it seems, is gone. (We asked the IRS for more information about the "earlier 2011 data collection," and will update this post when available.)

Why doesn't congress bring up these points? It seems like they just accept it when they come back with BS.

The emails are older than 6 months.

Not really. It's typical IT policy when someone leaves that if they can't just reuse the hardware for someone else they junk it.

One would think they'd hold on to a senior official's hard drive but federal IT is generally not the brightest in such matters, and there is no incentive to do anything special.

Aahhhhh, so the Feds store everyone's metadata in a giant bunker in Utah, but erase their own emails after 6 months...

The NSA has them. They are lying if they say the don't. Ask Snowden he'll tell you.

No. They've reconstructed 24,000 of her emails from this time period by getting them from other computers and they will be providing these if that have not already done so.

Did you read the link? The title of the article is "sources: emails likely gone forever"

And I'm asking how stupid they think we are to believe those emails are gone forever just because a hard drive crashed.

Right now there has got to be someone on Obama's staff that is not sleeping because they know someone out there may have kept a copy of an incriminating Email, as a CYA measure, for political leverage, or to sell to the highest bidder. I am hoping it is the latter and one of the big news players will be willing to open their checkbook.

I don't have any of my emails on my hard drive, they magically appear when I log on to Gmail. I can access my emails back to 08 when I opened the account. All of this hard drive crap is bullshite. She should be going to jail for obstruction and not just her either whoever had a hand in destroying evidence. Another thing She should never have been allowed to plead the fifth, she was a paid Govt employee fifth amendment wouldn't apply.

Was this outside of protocol in that situation or just standard operating procedure?

there is no way in hell it is SOP at a major federal agency to recycle hard drives much less of someone at her level AND not have backups--redundant backups.

yep.

that's why everyone freaked out when Cantor, who was backed by the Koch Bros and spent $2mill+, was defeated by a noname "Tea Partier" who spent less than $200k. I saw so many idiotic Dems bitching about this as a further detriment to "reaching across the aisle." ok.

i don't know Brat from scat, but this is at least some indication of the disconnect between DC and the taxpaying populace.

pardon hijack.
