He's proposing to remove the sales tax increase in exchange for adding to the number of things that the sales tax applies. The sales tax increase will sunset. The expanded categories of taxed items likely won't.
Sleight of hand. Doubt the House goes for this.

JBE is using one time money and accounting tricks just as Jindal did and he's adding more programs while doing it, and he raised taxes over one billion dollars.
JBE inherited a mess, and got a quick fix with a huge tax increase, but he cut very little and he still had to use the same "tricks" Jindal used.
The mess was mostly economic, Jindal failed to deal with that properly, and now JBE is doubling down and not dealing with the same issues.

I don't see why the morals protest came into play so much for the race for governor 10 years after the whole scandal, when apparently voters didn't care too much about it 2 years after the scandal broke when Vitter won re-election to the senate in a landslide.

Did you read the article? He is proposing to replace the Corporate income tax with a a GRT. It is literally in the opening paragraph. This would create a more stable and broader tax base.
This is one of the most conservative proposals he can make. Lower rates on a broader base. It closes the door on many loopholes, and is the closest thing to a flat tax you can imagine.
Just doing quick math, this would be pretty neutral for my business.

Isn't it apples and oranges?
Is the Corporate Income tax levied on Subchapter S companies? I don't think so.
Would the new tax be levied on Sub chapter S companies and other small businesses who don't pay corporation taxes? It seems like it would.
My business would pay now, where as before we paid nothing.

Businesses lose money now and still pay taxes, lots of taxes. Sales, business taxes, property taxes, inventory taxes, etc. are all paid by businesses.
It appears with the new system you would just pay more taxes and then just lose more money.

If you reall want to look at what got us into this mess aside from the cratering of the oil and gas market (huge impact), it was the scrapping of the Stelly Plan which actually reduced sales taxes, etc. but did make an increase in income taxes. Of course people don't like to pay income tax....but they don't mind getting raped on sales taxes so the legislature repealed it.
Look, if you want things like roads and road maintenance. Fire protection, police protection....flood protection and the maintenance thereof as well as education for the kids (not everyone can afford the 10K a year (minimum) it takes to send their kid to a Catholic or private school...then those things require money. I think the tax burden in Louisiana is kind of high especially on the sales tax end as well as the "fees" you pay. But taxes are a reality.
A lot of us bitch when things get tight and the legislature says they may have to raise taxes. We always say well, the state will have to do with less. Fair enough, but no one ever really says what they are willing to do without when it comes to services. We can bitch about the Medicaid expansion , but, we pay for the poor one way or the other when they get sick either through taxes or higher rates on our insurance.
We probably as a state need to do better at getting federal royalties on oil and gas from offshore leases that pass through Louisiana. Personally, I would hit the refiners wit a tax....they are not going to run off anywhere....it's been 30 years since a new refinery was built in the US. Also change the homestead exemption to tax the 2nd 75K....you could reduce or eliminate the state sales tax on things like .....food

You do realize that they just raised state taxes over a billion dollars. La. Sales tax went from 4% to 5% which was a 25% increase right there.
The current state budget was pegged at 26.9 Billion. Just slightly over 12 Billion dollars comes directly from the Federal Govt. meaning La. generates roughly 15 Billion dollars in taxes and fees, etc a year.
That means La. taxpayers just took a hit of over 7% in state sales tax increases.
With a state in recession is it a good idea to keep raising taxes without cutting the superfluous programs and the pork?

Yep, in Louisiana that is always the solution...higher sales taxes. I don't like it....but in the end you won't squeal as much about paying 10% in sales taxes as you would paying just 1% more in income taxes although in the end you end up paying more in real dollars over the course of a year....assuming consumption levels stay constant....which they tend to do.
