I just heard on 99.5 WRNO that the prisons will be handing out free booksacks and school supplies to everyone with a parent in prison. Something is wrong with this picture. The gave a stat about "this many LA students have a parent in jail."

ETA:
quote:

"With an estimated 64,000 plus Louisiana children with an incarcerated parent, it seemed simple that this would be an ideal community service project," Angela Whittaker, vice president of the Louisiana Correctional Association, said in a press release.

That number seems small.

It's not the kids' fault their parent(s) is in jail.

No one should.

It isn't these kids' fault their parent(s) is a piece of shite. Give them every opportunity to break the cycle.

It is society's responsibility to take care of children who don't have proper parental oversight. Not for the feel good altruism, but for practicality, self preservation. Let these kids break the cycle so they don't break into your house.

Everyone in jail is receiving free stuff from taxpayers. Rather have their kids get some school supplies than pay for cable and workout equipment for prisoners.

Why is that mindset part of the problem? It's not the kid's fault his/her parent is in jail.

Am I supposed to be outraged about kids getting school supplies? This is a good thing in a shitty situation.

Yeah, more free stuff is the answer. That'll fix it. It's my responsibility to provide for my family and theirs. Let's keep providing them with the means to continue on this path and not have to go to work. The less time they have to spend working, the more time they'll have to better themselves.

this is actually pretty constructive, the cycle of bad behavior can only be broken with opportunity

Many will not take advantage of the opportunity, but some will

Sounds like sound policy to me

You are paying for the mama's new iPhone and hair appointment because she doesn't have to pay for school supplies/housing/food.

Why not just put the kids in jail with the parent? They're gonna end up there eventually anyway

Good for the kids, but I highly doubt some free school supplies is going to make a dent in the "cycle" and is likely to just be good PR for Democrat candidates.

I'm about as conservative as they come and I don't see a problem with this.

The KID did not break the law or go to jail. The KID is a victim in all of this. We should do whatever we can to try to break the cycle.

It should be interesting, however, to see how this is run. I suspect that one of the reasons why the 64,000 figure seems so low is that many of these "parents" in jail were not listed as the father so that they mother could get extra welfare benefits. Will they now, somehow, be listed as the father?

I can certainly see both sides of this coin. People who see a problem will point to the fact that there are too many parents in jail and we shouldn't be using taxpayer money to fund school supplies. On the other hand, prisons are providing those supplies to kids in the hopes that they will get an education and try to not go to prison. In the end, it's going to be much cheaper to give away school supplies than to have to place a few kids in prison in a few years.
