So what's this thread about guys?

I second this.

I hate when you LSU fans have these St. George pissing matches and I have no clue whats going on.
I know the general issue but whats going on specifically as far as this thread is concerned.

I thought for a quick 30 minute piece it was very good and fair.

For the St. George crowd, the doc could have definitely been worse. Yes, it did paint them in a racist light but it's not like they made it out to be a community of David Dukes. Honestly, I expected it to be more slanted in BR's favor.

That's crazy, I went to a public school in EBRP way back when and I can't think of 10 the entire 4 years I was there.

BRMHS. I don't recall one in the six years that my brother and I were there (two years overlapping).

Amazing how they managed to not interview or discuss any of the comments that were made by the biggest opponent of the SG movement.

Agreed.

It didn't address the source of the district's problems though.

I agree, I thought it was good and fair of both sides. I am from BR, now living in the Ne. I am a product of the white flight after my fam moved from BR to the burbs. I thought this was enlightening documentary.

I also wanted to make a point about the schools where I live now, in the progressive NE. I have never seen as much segregation in my life as I have up here. Even after we moved for reasons unbeknownst to me.

They used Baton Rouge as a reference for a larger national trend, which suggests many things.

I'm ok with what they presented overall.

Thank God. Screw Delgado. He's a stereotypical blowhard that is only concerned with getting his face on tv or his name in the paper. His political life is short lived.

They did say the district was poor and had schools taken over by the state but you are right, they did not emphasize that. They fix emphasize the lack of discipline.

They also made the principal a good guy only to state for the record that he was removed.

Eta
Another thing that struck me was that the EBR system was only 12% white!!
How is this integration? It's not, it's a power and money grab and not a mixing of cultures or peoples.

So if the St George people do nothing, everyone would be equally subjected to crappy schools, like they have been for many years.

Am I the only one that noticed they blurred the black people's faces in the audience at the st George meeting towards the end? That's kinda f'd up.

I thought it was evenhanded...typical for frontline. I understand the desire to escape failing school systems and the concern of ghettofying the school system into poor schools v rich schools. It's a mess and no matter the ultimate result someone is going to get hurt.

Thought it was fine.

I think it would have been quite balanced had it showcased some regular (non-Browning) family who had reason to support the incorporation for school reasons, since it showcased a City of BR family with that kid who wanted to go out to Woodlawn.

I admire that mom for the way she is pushing education for her family. She and her type are not the problem. Thd problem is those that don't want to learn and ruin school for others .

Her family is the type of family that will be hurt by the st George breakaway.

Aren't here kids in magnet programs? One was at McKinley and the other changed his mind and got accepted to a city magnet school.

How are they hurt?

I couldn't stomach it tonight so I DVR'd it. From yalls reactions it doesn't sound as race baited as i thought though. I'll give it a look tomorrow.

not sure where she lives, but kids living in St. George are kicked out of magnet program if the experiment passes

Of course. You can't say anything bad about them, they seem like good folks working hard to overcome not being socioeconomically-advantaged.

This family was the group in the show most likely to gain sympathy from viewers. The problem is that if these earnest, deserving types were actually typical of City of BR students, there'd probably be no significant problem with the school system.

We get a glimpse of one BR family of students, and they aren't representative. It's not a huge thing, it's just what stuck out to me as unbalanced
