Formaldehyde found in imported Vietnames and Chinese catfish

LINK

quote:

A large number of fish imported from China and Vietnam and sold in at least some U.S. supermarkets contain unnatural levels of formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, according to tests performed and verified by researchers at a North Carolina chemical engineering firm and North Carolina State University.

quote:

Around 25 percent of all the fish purchased from supermarkets by researchers in the Raleigh, N.C., area were found to contain formaldehyde, a toxic chemical compound commonly used as a medical disinfectant or embalming agent. All of the fish found to contain the compound were imported from Asian countries, and it was not found in fish from the U.S. or other regions.

quote:

Formaldehyde is illegal in food beyond any naturally occurring trace amounts. But, according to chemical engineer A. James Attar and his colleagues who conducted the tests, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not test any imported fish for formaldehyde contamination, and only 4 percent of imported fish gets tested for any contaminants at all.

This is for those few of you who on here opposed the bill to move imported catfish inspection to the USDA rather than the FDA and hold those fish to our domestically produced fish's standards. Y'all said you never heard of any instances of contamination and it was all bull shite in the name of special interests to protect the domestic industry. Fact is, the imported fish is crap and currently risky to consume.

Congress is supposed to hold a vote on the Catfish bill this month.

I bet you've eaten some. These frickin companies are sneaky too. I once picked up a pack of frozen catfish fillets in the store (seafood is horrible up here). The package had a big American flag on it, and the company was called something like American Seafood. However, on the back of the package, in fine print at the bottom was the disclosure "Raised in Vietnam." I hate that shite.

What are the long term affects from consuming formaldehyde at those levels or is it just a precaution?

U.S raised catfish industry is pushing to move the Asian imports inspection program from the FDA to the USDA. USDA does a more thorough job, and also the USDA inspects domestically grown fish.

It is a carcinogen. Also it is what they use to preserve and embalm dead bodies for burial. Stuff is potent

Comments like this make you look just as pathetic as the posters who say "CT just hates all Jews."

Study says from the samples they found 1 in ever 4 fish contained large amount of formaldehyde. So if you and your family were to buy a pack of filets for dinner, say there is a family of 4, and they eat 2 filets a piece, that means at least 1 person, possibly 2 would consume this chemical that could be hazardous to their health.

If it were 1 or 2% containing unnatural amount of it, I would dismiss it as an anomaly. But 25% is just ridiculous.

I haven't eaten catfish in about a decade, and that was at a fish fry out of courtesy to the folks who caught them. Not a fan.

Chicken on the other hand...

It is sold in our local supermarkets as 'swai' and is cheaper (around $4 a pound) than catfish which, when not on sale, is $8 a pound. Most of the seafood imported from Vietnam, Thailand and China is 'dirty' and full of junk. Most of the frozen shrimp sold here is from Thailand or Vietnam. We only buy catfish labeled as being from the US and only Gulf shrimp, which is more expensive but worth it.

Imagine that: A consumer making an educated decision on which product to purchase.

I applaud you.

Now, if only most of the trolls in the catfish threads would understand that the protectionist tactics being pushed by the domestic catfish industry are anti-liberty and would adopt a consistent political philosophy when it comes to them.

I don't understand how a guy who claims to be a Rand Paul supporter can push these protectionist tactics with a straight face.

I honestly still am confused about the debate.

are they arguing for tariffs in addition to imported fish being under the same scrutiny? or are they willing to give up the tariffs in exchange?

the last thread went like 10 pages and I feel like this was never addressed

Someone was suggesting that it's okay to subject American growers to costly inspections and standards but not the imported fish.....because he's free market and all.

Not a big leap. Rand voted for sanctions.
