his lawyer used the STORY TO TELL language for several reasons. He was trying to secure immunity which is smart (SEE OLLIE NORTH)
his lawyer is an rabid neverTrumper so he does not have a bombshell to implicate Trump but he didn't mind acting like he did for his client.

Imagine if you will for a minute YOU are a highly decorated and respected military man named, Mike Flynn.
Wouldn't you want immunity from a witch hunt? He did absolutely nothing different than all of DC does,(like they said in the hearing today) communicated with Russia and foreign leaders, even became a lobbyist as a retired civilian and or when working for Obama...
Wouldn't you try to get immunity to end the shitstorm --when you know damned well in the back of your mind-- that Brennan and or Clapper could have set you up? On the night of the election both Obama and HRC started the muh russians. HRC tweeted 'computer scientists' said Trump had a secret Trump Tower server. She would have done ANYTHING to win and needed an excuse when she lost.
It is so obvious to anyone it is sabatoge...

I'm pretty sure they take that power away from you after you're impeached.
Congress is full of lawyers. They will play this in the proper order.
When you have multiple co-defendants with tales to tell, the leverage is with the prosecution.
