f she has a knife, a stun gun would have been just as effective... She would have to be within a few feet to cause you harm.

I learned in a class that most people cover 21 feet in about 1.5 seconds.

They need to slow cook that fricking pig. You don't kill a kid for lunging at you with a knife. You disarm her. Even if you do get stabbed in the process. You're a cop, you're trained and she's special needs. Most single stab wounds aren't fatal so you buck up and get the knife away from her. If you can't do that, you have no business being a police officer.

Or call for backup. I would guess that any 3 guys, trained or not, could slowly move in and pin her back with a chair or something before disarming her safely. What type of coward would pull the trigger instead of getting up for the challenge?

1)Cop didn't know she was "special needs". In fact the article just said she suffered from depression. Not sure if she was even "special needs".

2) If I'm in that situation I know I'm not getting stabbed. I don't expect an officer to expect to take a stabbing while on the job.

3)She was 18. An 18 year-old is quite capable of murder.

Houston had a VERY similar situation recently where an old timer with some sort of mental illness had a knife and the cops ended up shooting him dead after he lunged. Not quite sure people get up in arms when the cops life is on the line.

The problem is that the cop only has to think his life is on the line. A kid with a Wii is shot dead. A guy getting a cane out of his truck is shot. An elderly man in a nursing home is shot with a beanbag shotgun for holding something the cop thought was a weapon (it killed him). An 18 year old schizophrenic with a screwdriver was shot by a policeman in the kids home.

The police aren't doing themselves any favors in how they handle these situations. And they're coming in at 1 every other day.

cops love killing special needs people as much they love killing a dog. If I had a special needs family member the last thing I would ever do is call the cops

Don't you people get it? The reason people join the police department is on the hopes that they can kill someone one day.

Gonna be interesting if the neighbors accounts are correct that he shot her in the back...

I'd have to be almost certain they were going to imminently injure someone seriously.

There's just a huge chance the police will just kill them.

And when calling paramedics, they will dispatch police. Don't call them either.

They killed that kid last year. I believe he was like 90lbs

The one where they had him pinned and one of the cops "allegedly" said " We don't have time for this"

It ultimately won't matter. The cat will get a paid leave while the police department performs a perfunctory investigation and then they'll release a statement that the officer thought he was in danger and acted "according to training."

Funny. If they had dispatched paramedics as requested, what would they have done?

You are correct. Two police officers had the situation relatively under control. A third walked in and within two minutes the kid was dead.

This story smells.

The family claims that they called 911 just to send paramedics over forgotten meds?

Don't believe that for a second.

I can see the cops being far too quick to draw the weapon but the family is obviously trying to sugarcoat what happened after the fact.

I mean obviously the dispatcher on 911 felt there was something other than the family's story went they sent the cops rather than medical personell.

They likely would have calmly approached the situation and we would have never heard about it...

The girl was dead within 20 seconds of the cop arriving.

I'd imagine it happened like this

Officer comes pulling up with sirens on at high rate of speed
Girl turns and sees officer
Officer gets out and starts screaming at girl with gun drawn
Girl yells back and tells him to stay away
Officer yells again
Girl turns to run from officer
Officer opens fire

I agree, they aren't but the fact remains - are cops supposed to ask every person wielding a knife at them "hey buddy, do you have mental problems?" - there are in fact less than lethal ways to resolve these types of issues.......particularly with a knife so overzealous cops should use such recourse.

Call me sick in the head, but I believe that anyone who points a gun at a cop should be shot immediately....and most are.

They didn't just happen on this girl. They were responding to a paramedic call about a disturbed girl. Assuming she has mental issues seems like a no-brainer.

I'm less bothered by cops shooting someone armed with a knife. But there is a pattern developing in our country the way that police respond to situations and escalate the issue rather than de-escalate the issue.

One of the more dumbass things I've read. You don't let people stab you. Period. Does anyone want a knife in the neck heart or groin?

C'mon man

Like I said there is very little info yet. And that cop better hope the people are wrong about her being shot it the back.

I also hope there is video from the car.

I can't believe I feel that way.... I used to staunchly be on the side of the LEOs, but that has done a complete 180.
