Dr. Ben Carson's take on gun control...

...you right to own a gun should be subject to where you live. I've never thought about it this way. Urban areas have a much higher firearm injury rate and most of those are caused by handguns. So, people in urban areas cannot have them.

I dont think it should happen. But at least he's trying to bring some rational, mathmatical thought to the table.

While I dissagree with him on this subject, I would still vote for him (as of right now) over the current pres.

what say the PT?

Totally disagree on this issue with him. I'd argue, citizens need them more in those areas legally, than in a near zero crime area.

eta- As far as voting for him, I need more info on where his ideology is. I've seen his breakfast speech and an interview or two, but that's all. Don't know nearly enough about him. But I do feel as though he's an intelligent guy and would use rationale to govern, rather than emotion. And that would be a huge step ahead of where we've been since the 80's.

I sure am glad all the criminals in the ghetto will follow that rule.

This works so well where it's currently implemented.

I would want a gun even more if I lived in an Urban area.

He should just come out and say only whites and Asians should have guns.

Totally wrong yet totally right at the same time

The anti-gun crowd argues that guns from Virginia end up on New York and Massachusetts streets.

(I'm about as pro-gun as you can be, just playing devil's advocate.)

But oh, think about this... if you live in one of these "high risk" areas you must be an idiot or make poor choices.

So this would be like giving an IQ test to determine if someone can own a gun or not.

Can we apply this to voting as well?

No.

Most of those are due to criminals who aren't supposed to have guns, but miraculously do. Why won't they just follow the law?!!

quote:

So, people in urban areas cannot have them

These are the ones who probably need them the most (the law-abiding ones).

It would be interesting if someone came out and said this backing it with nothing more than cold hard math. Im not saying this should happen but it would be something to see someone say and defend it with statistics in urban areas.

This. While I respect Dr. Carson overall, his prespective on gun control is out to lunch.

I do not agree because that takes away the 2nd amendment rights of any person that lives in the city that would want to choose to own a handgun for protection against criminals.

re: Dr. Ben Carson's take on gun control...
Here is the problem:

"you[r] right to ... should be subject ..."

There are a lot of people held up as smart because they can come up with complex ideas or have memorized a lot of facts. But when people fail to understand basic principles simply because they are abstract, I really have to question just how intelligent they are.

A right is inherent, it is a part of being a human being. The right to own a gun is a consequense of the right to self-defense, and the right to join with others for mutual self-defense.

When Jefferson said that all men ... are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, he was stating a philosophical premise upon which government in this country was to stand. Because of a combination of ignorance, stupidity, thirst for power, and pathetic government run indoctrination centers (aka public schools) most people don't have the slightest clue of what this premise means much less what a philosophical premise in general is and what it has to do with logic.

This is not just a question of semantics and the word "right", it is a reflection of a fundamental lack of understanding of the concept of a right.

(This is not directed at white perch, but at the thinking which leads Carson to the quote in the OP.)

Deltaland is correct and the only disagreement with his statement I have (if I understand his statement) would be semantic. Such laws do not actually take away a person's rights, they can't, but they do mean that the state will use force against a person for exercising such rights. Legitimate governments exist to protect the rights of the governed so such an action is the act of an illegitimate government.

So, given carsons stance on gun control, would you vote for him?

And interstate gun transport will happen regardless of whether it is legal or not.

Haven't heard that in a while.

I agree, but I expect him to evolve.

yeah, I am not sure how you could superimpose trends in a given community to individual rights as protected by the 2nd amendment. Also, still not clear on what laws are enforceable by local government and state government in the aftermath of that supreme court ruling in DC last year or the year before.

He appears to be someone who is more concerned with outcomes and results than getting reelected. DC needs more people like him.
