So Dardenne thinks is so critical Louisiana moves to Common Core Now! I think everyone that's pushing it needs their income taxes audited to see who's getting paid a little bonus.

There is no big risk to delay CC until the trash in it is weeded out.

The ability to manipulate CC as they did in California to include critical thinking ( Did the Holocaust really happen, which included some anti Jewish internet links for reference)needs to be prevented from ever happening again.

Conflating these sorts of questions isn't helpful to the discussion.

Just a suggestion: I know shite about Common Cire other than the awful math examples I've seen posted in news articles and social media that make mental math no longer mental.

So rather than berating everyone who is opposed to it, how bout you provide some examples and links where people can get more (and correct) info?

This is why no one likes IB, no matter how right he may be.

Uhh...yeah...that's exactly what we need. Let's use the overreaching arm of the tax collector. What if an Obama hack said the same thing about anyone who supports the Keystone Pipeline??

There were several bills to do just that this past legislative session. Jindal instead spent his time away from the halls of the Capitol, and his workers on the 4th Floor did squat to help any of those bills.

I posted a link to practice test several times.

You should take the test

Let me berate prez one more time.

Here once again is the link to where you can take the practice test yourself.

LINK

It is a simple test and I personally think it would be wonderful if we took as a goal having all our third graders pass this test.

BUT this thread is about how far out of bounds Jindal is.

Anyone that supports his tactics support a governor who ignores laws to get the results he wants just as Obama does.

I guess that makes Obama supporters out of all you guys defending Jindal.

Well failure to carry it out is against Louisiana law. The law Jindal established.

He's using the courts so that so that statement is dumb.

The reason the courts are now involved is because Jindal decided to try and stop the testing via his version of executive order. He did NOTHING this past session to try and address the issue through the proper process.

What is so bad about Common Core?

I have beef with the Math.

It's basically making you think of the shortcuts to get an answer. For example.

Let's say my dinner bill is $75 and i want to leave a 20% tip. Well, in my head i calculate:

20% of 100 is $20
50 is half of 100, so half of $20 is $10.
25 is half of 50, so half of $10 is $5.
$10+$5 = $15 dollar tip

I do this fairly quickly. Common core is instituting this as the way to do math. My problem, is that i do these steps on my own, because i've learned enough math in my youth, to be able to do math like this quickly as a shortcut. Common core basically eliminates the basic building blocks of math, and forces kids to use this as THE ONLY method, and expects kids to write it out in long had form. It wastes a bunch of time, and basically eliminates the fundamentals of mathematics, IMO.

Starting out kids doing this in math early on will hurt kids when they get to more advanced subjects like physics and calculus.

IB,

Every person I talk to is for Common Core guidelines. This one is put together with all the
brain power the Obama care used.

Although first gathering steam in the late 90's and bank rolled with over $200 million of Bill Gates cash, before any research and not one sentence of a program completed. They had 15 years to research other nations and polish a program up and failed.
There's something wrong going on here.

My calculation:

10% of 75 = $7.50
2 x $7.50 = $15.00

You really think any governor does this stuff on his own. He doesn't trust his own guys.

i just use the 10% rule

10% of 75 is 7.5

so 20% of 75 is 15

Those math examples aren't part of Common Core. They are part of a curriculum known as "Everyday Math" (aka Fuzzy Math) which is sold to local school districts as a curriculum to meet Common Core math objectives. It would be like if reaching a certain point was mandated by the state and someone bought a Yugo to do that and then suddenly the mandate is interpreted as everyone has to buy a Yugo. Does that make sense?

The horrible math problems you've seen are not a result of Common Core. That curriculum has been around for a while.

Here's a link that lays it out a little more clearly. LINK

I think the idea is more to teach math than to teach test taking.

As I noted, none of this is part of Common Core. It's being sold to school districts as meeting Common Core requirements. But Common Core doesn't mandate the curriculum.

Thank God somebody gets it. Common Core is just a set of standards that need to be met. How is that a bad thing especially in Louisiana?

It's not. Especially when you read the actual objectives.
