Curious, what was the justification in getting the Manafort wire tap?

I'm genuinely curious. It couldn't have been the fans fake dossier because that had Trump pissing on Russian whores, not Manafort.

they spied on every person close to Trump.

By far the largest political scandal in American History. Sad part is that it is still going on. It just morphed into muh Russia

FISA issues wiretaps for tax evasion for citizens?

I thought the justification all along was the piss dossier.

The FBI surveilled Manafort the entire year of 2015 and didn't find anything.

They went back to the FISA courts after Manafort joined team Trump and were initially denied. Then the Obama DOJ used the piss dossier as a justification and the second time around was a charm and the Obama DOJ and FBI received their warrant from the FISA court.

Anyway that's my understanding.

The informed opinion, yet to be verified by the MSM, is that Manafort became the subject of that second warrant around July 2016 after his conversations were picked up on lawful surveillance of Russian spymaster Sergei Kislyak.

ETA: "second"

The CNN piece from Monday said this:

quote:

Sources say the second warrant was part of the FBI's efforts to investigate ties between Trump campaign associates and suspected Russian operatives. Such warrants require the approval of top Justice Department and FBI officials, and the FBI must provide the court with information showing suspicion that the subject of the warrant may be acting as an agent of a foreign power.

U.S. Gov't Wiretapped Trump Campaign Chairman, CNN, 9.18.17

But it doesn't cite a specific cause. A CBS story last night published this:

quote:

Long before the special counsel began investigating Russian meddling in the U.S. election -- and whether anyone in the Trump campaign was involved -- Paul Manafort was the target of an FBI investigation. It included electronic surveillance of the one-time Trump campaign chairman.

CBS News has learned that the surveillance on Manafort occurred during the 2016 presidential campaign.

According to a former U.S. official, the intercepts picked up conversations between Manafort and Russian individuals about the campaign.

Surveillance of Paul Manafort Occurred During the 2016 Campaign, CBS News, 9.19.17

I haven't seen any reporting that says what exactly triggered the FISA but it was probably Manafort popping up on Russian communications the IC was monitoring.

That was prior to #Pissgate being released, so that still doesn't explain the original surveillance.

Yep, and they'll guard that info getting out like it's the plague. Either incompetence at the highest levels of National Security Apparatus...or overt criminality. Both...IMO.

I'm beginning to loathe Jeff Sessions.

Per Fortune magazine.
quote:

The surveillance, which included wiretapping, searches, and other types of observation, reportedly began in 2014, when Manafort was the subject of an investigation into work done by a group of Washington consulting firms for the former ruling party of Ukraine.

FISA covers money laundering? Please tell me you do not believe this.

If it's coming from the Kremlin it might.

Not money laundering, but story breaking from the Post that Manafort offered private briefings on the election to Russian oligarch, Oleg Deripaska.

Washington Post

Edit: BTW, this guy is Kremlin-connected and and Manafort has owed money to one of his associates.

NBC news now reporting that Manafort's spokesman has confirmed that Manafort offered the briefings.

Paul says send lawyers, guns, and $.

From CNN article quoted in one of my posts above:

quote:

A secret order authorized by the court that handles the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) began after Manafort became the subject of an FBI investigation that began in 2014. It centered on work done by a group of Washington consulting firms for Ukraine's former ruling party, the sources told CNN. The surveillance was discontinued at some point last year for lack of evidence, according to one of the sources. The FBI then restarted the surveillance after obtaining a new FISA warrant that extended at least into early this year.
