I don't think this would happen in a govt office.

Probably because the government doesn't make their deadlines sooner than they are actually willing to deal with in order to make you think the salesperson is doing you a favor by taking the return past 2 weeks. Seriously you think the person was just like "hey, this is a pretty cool old guy - I'm gonna do him a solid!"

You ever go to the grocery store and the lady accidentally scans an item twice - and she actually has to get manager to walk over and void the duplicate item?

How much do you think that lady should make an hour?

Apparently not enough to trust her with the awesome administrative decision of voiding an obviously mistaken transaction on the receipt.

Though I have noticed they don't do this crap at Rouse's - they actually have the power! Maybe they do in other stores now perhaps things have changed. I would think a good computer algorithm could spot the cashiers who are voiding to steal.

Wrong. The reason they acted the way they did is because in a free market they knew I could go somewhere else with my business. They wanted me to come back to buy more stuff because I was treated well.

OTOH, there is the DMV.

So...how much? If she can't be trusted with that kind of power...what is she owed an hour for her work?

Bingo. Tuba should only buy from Ace, Lowes or a local hardware store from now on.

That's a good idea - but I'll never get my hour and a half back and I still have to go back to the fricking store because they were out of stock when I made the return and because they were going to charge me a delivery fee for their mistake.

The lady at the return desk supposed that another customer (or criminal, actually) switched the blinds in the store - and an employee noticed the opened box and just taped it back up. Sounds like a lazy arse practice to me. When you notice merchandise has been tampered with - if you don't care to rip off your customers - its your job to ensure the product is still what you claim it is.

You obviously have never dealt with the federal government, especially with government contracts. Or for that matter private government. shite, just go to the DMV

Actually, yes. In a civilized society, and when interacting with private business, not being an a-hole gets you very far. I'm willing to bet, you were being an a-hole as you walked in.

He hasn't even said she deserves "a living wage" or "minimum wage"

this is proving to be an interesting exercise.

You do realize this is to prevent employees from ringing up a "customer" who "pays with cash", then voiding it and giving a "refund" to themselves, right?

Have you never worked a job where you use a cash register before? Jesus what a terrible argument for "red tape"

Your problem is with the inefficiency of large organizations. Be it a coporation, FIFA, or the Federal Government.

In contrast I spent zero hours deadling with government red tape yesterday.

The government red tape that Home Depot has to deal with was reflected in the cost of the blinds you purchased.

He is making arguments against his own positions. All while trying to state that bad customer service is "red-tape"...and because he didn't personally spend any time dealing with the govt. today... it makes a point.

If a convenience store owner in the ghetto was selling phone cards that said 50 minutes but really only had 40 minutes he could go to prison and at the very least would be fricked with by the police. Home Depot is a big corporation. Their consequence for essentially the same act is zero, and for a minute they thought they didn't even have to refund the purchase! Different standards....

Here's an interesting idea. GO TO A DIFFERENT frickING STORE. It's what's allowed in a free open market society.

Again, if you are this bothered with it, go to another store. Or continue to be stupid, you're choice.

Last time I spent any amount of time dealing with government red tape is tax season.

No, his problem is, he is trying to equate product returns to private vs. government, and failing horribly.

You need to look up the theft by fraud statutes. Wanna guess which of your two examples meets the elements???
