The omission of his status gives me pause based on the times we are in.
I agree and that is a fair assessment IMO. {I just hopped back on this thread so don't think I was calling you out and then bailed }
Wouldn't be surprised to find out he was.

Just like black on black crime this will be largely ignored by the MSM and useful idiots on social media/forums.
the article I read said

appeared to be targeting Hispanic and African-American victims

It just seems that the AP would want to quell any potential fuel to the fire when it comes to treatment of illegals by stating in the article that the suspect was in fact a citizen.
If they did that they would be criticized for making a political point of the fact that he was a citizen. Now if it does come out that he was in fact an illegal alien and that the AP knew of that and omitted it from their story, that would be proof of biased reporting. Though many papers won't report the race or status of criminal or victims

Would you be happy requiring every Hispanic having a little sombrero tattooed on them and stitched on their clothing so we know if they are legal or not? Why is it your automatic assumption that he's illegal?
Excellent idea!
Any illegal who is deported once and then caught in the country again should have the word ILLEGAL tattooed on their forehead and on the backs of both hands in one inch block letters before being deported again. Make it hard as hell to hide the next time they sneak in.
