A liberal-arts college in Vermont decided it would make some waves by selecting a murderous jailbird as its commencement speaker. Goddard College announced Monday that alumnus Mumia Abu-Jamal, Class of '96, was selected by the Fall class of 2014 to speak at commencement this Saturday. Abu-Jamal will make his virtual appearance in a video address to Goddard's fall graduating class on Sunday October 5 along filmmaker Steven Vittoria, who filmed a documentary about Abu-Jamal in 2012. But if you're worried that this will be one of the only commencement speeches you'll find at Goddard- don't worry- the college hosts 20 different commencement ceremonies every year.

Cop killer speaking isn't an inherently bad thing. Has he changed in prison?

My highschool had probably 3 guys who'd murdered someone or committed rape come talk to us and they were really inspirational and moving.

There are certain things in society that act as good utter stupidity litmus tests. People who glum on to this Mumia guy as some sort of great cause celebre are certainly one of those.

Those three guys at least admitted to doing the crime and can provide stories about turning ones life around.

Has this pos admitted to anything and isn't he merely a lesson to keep denying and lying?

More evidence that spending at 'higher education institutions' is out of control

Listened to a representative from Goddard address the issue the other night. Don't believe I'll be hiring any Goddard grads anytime soon. Goofy fella.

I wouldn't call this school a college at all.

I don't know what is sadder. That the students invited him to speak or that students attend this "college"

quote:

Goddard College currently operates on an intensive low-residency model. Each student designs his/her own curriculum; the college currently uses a student self-directed, mentored system in which faculty issue narrative evaluations of student’s progress instead of grades.

The intensive low-residency model requires students to come to campus every six months for approximately eight days, during which time students engage in a variety of activities and lectures from early morning until late in the evening, and create detailed study plans. During the semester students study independently, sending in "packets" to their faculty mentors every three weeks. The content of the packets varies with each individual, but focuses on research, writing, and reflection related to each student's individualized study plan.

He's serving time for the crime he committed. If he has changed as a person and is a source of inspiration, then I have no problem with it.

You think because someone has committed a grievous act he can no longer contribute anything positive to anyone, ever? Jesus is giving you a thumbs down right now.

Is his cause celebre hinging on him having repented for what he did? That's not the impression I have, but all I know are tidbits from this 'Free Mumia' movement.

There is a glut of inspirational people who aren't criminals to pick from, why go this route?

The first step to being a positive example is admitting mistakes. We're still waiting on Mumia.
