Millions of californians did not register.
Millions did not vote even after registering.

Cali says, never make popular vote the solution.

not usually to the same extent

i know this as a guy who has worked on multiple DEM campaigns in a red state

a lot of this has to do with the gerrymandered districts in favor of DEMs and the downstream stuff

*ETA: remember the GOP dominates the downstream so those people do go and vote. not true in Cali

Here's another tidbit of politics. Apportionment is done by way of the Census. Illegal aliens are counted and electoral votes are awarded. Thus, illegals are indeed voting in the elections and they are represented in the Electoral College.

Which is why Prez voting stats are misleading. Conservatives know they have no shot and don't bother...So the Dem will always win bigger than demographic reality.

It's only if issues carry conservatives to the polls...

The issues reveal the true political demographic...

For instance... Conservatives in CA won a few hot button issues...

Lost a few...

And came together with libs over important issues...

One for one by state, no.

The point is a popular vote election would look completely different and using those numbers now is silly.

They would probably have less influence under straight popular vote. That's due to the winner take all nature of the Electoral College. In the current system, the D nominee has 55/538 which is more than 10% of the total vote just by winning California. With strict popular vote, the D comes out of there with roughly a 6% to 4% lead.

That's before you adjust for changes in turnout and changes in candidate strategy.

California and New York are prime examples as to why all 50 states need to be like Maine with the EC vote broken up into congressional districts instead of winner take all...
