Can anyone logically defend the 21 drinking age law?

How this is legal in the United States has always been a mystery to me.

The list of things you are legally allowed to do or are eligible for in this country at 18: Marry, enlist, buy tobacco, vote, jail, death penalty, civil liability, and the list goes on.

Things you can't do: Buy alcohol, gamble (except on Indian Reservations, which are mostly 18).

Nope

16 year olds shouldn't be allowed to drive though IMO.

If you're old enough to die for old glory, you're old enough to take a damn shot of whiskey.

Drinking age is a giant arse farce.

Even the age of consent in most states is 17 or even 16 (maybe lower in some states).

So, you could be fricking like a rabbit for 5 years, but don't drink a beer.

On moral grounds, no it cannot be defended.

On medical grounds, there might be evidence that alcohol to an immature brain might cause harm (though I don't remember specifics or have any studies to cite, but Google can probably help here). The brain doesn't fully develop until the mid 20's.

It may be beside the point, but are there any statistics that show raising the drinking age has helped in any way?

For example, when Louisiana raised the drinking age from 18 to 21, was there a decrease in alcohol-related incidents or deaths?

This is a tough one for me. Think about how stupid you were at 21, double that, and you get 18.

The libertarian in me is also conflicted. If we were to change it to 18, why not just abolish the age restriction completely. Why 18?

I think 19 or 20 is a reasonable change because that excludes HS kids.

A physiological argument: it could be hypothesized that those close to the legal age are more likely to think themselves ready to drink and are more likely to drink underage. If we were to move the age to 18 15-17 year olds would then be the ones more likely to underage drink. Drinking alcohol to get drunk at an age where you are still developing your body and brain is not a good thing to do..

No, I cannot. I also cannot justify the criminalization of Marijuana and prostitution.

Maybe, but that's irrelevant. Why not raise it to 30? Save more lives. Outlaw alcohol. Save more lives.

This whole "but it saves XXX lives" is ridiculous.

The real question is "How is weed still illegal for any age in most states?"

15 years or so from now, when driverless cars are ubiquitous, there will be zero argument.

All that is fine. But we either need to define the age of majority or we don't.

You could change it to "marriage" or "join the army" in your post. Would it make more sense?

It is completely illogical to say that someone is old enough to go to war, receive the death penalty, vote or get married, but not to drink alcohol.

I think some stats show that drunk driving deaths decreased, but that coincided with safer cars...

Recently spent time in Denver and Keystone. I seriously do not understand why weed is illegal in most states still.

I am asking you. Defend your statement in light of the other thresholds to adulthood.

I said it may be beside the point. But the point of raising the question is that if there was a decrease in alcohol-related deaths, then that is an argument in favor of raising the drinking age whether you agree with it or not.
