KEY POINTS
The DOJ is launching a broad examination into big tech companies over fresh anti-competitive concerns. It’s the strongest move toward the tech industry by Attorney General William Barr, whose growing interest in the sector could deepen regulatory pressure. Shares of Amazon, Facebook and Alphabet fell

While the DOJ didn’t disclose specific company names, it’s launching the review based on “new Washington threats” from Facebook, Google, Amazon and Apple, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. The agency will examine practices of online platforms that dominate internet search, social media and retail services, the DOJ said in a statement Tuesday.

The move is the strongest by Attorney General William Barr towards Big Tech, which faces increased scrutiny from both political parties because of the expanded market power the companies have and the tremendous amount of consumer data they control. President Trump, a regular critic of Amazon and CEO Jeff Bezos, has claimed that Facebook is biased against conservatives and recently agreed with an assessment by tech investor Peter Thiel that perhaps Google should be investigated for not working with the U.S. government on a cloud project.

Yeah, even though I am a little leery of the government getting involved it's become obvious something needs to be done because they have gotten out of hand with their bias. They are pretty much publishers now so they need to be subject to some regulation.

Precisely why they’re being investigated. They only limit speech they don’t like.

This is pointless if it doesn't also target Google.

Absolutely.
So long as you don’t monopolize and control most avenues of speech, allowing what you deem to be free speech and censuring what you deem not to be free speech.
Are Google and Facebook like Standard Oil or Bell Telephone in their reach over the market? Or are they not?

No but they receive liability from the govt saying that what their users publish can't land them in jail or get them into trouble. So in order to receive this benefit they should be a neutral forum only regulating actual violence and threats not some conservative that doesn't want to shave a females balls.
frick these piece of shite companies

How do you break up a social media company like a telephone company?
Isn’t the whole nature of social media that everyone is in one space?
