Do you know anything about Cleveland, MS and its school district? It is one of the most successfully integrated school systems in the MS Delta. I guarantee there is no agenda by the school district here.
Also, from the court filing it looks like they are arguing that the grade weighting for AP courses was taken out for the other student to be included. The high school is so small that it seems like it would be easy to know if another student was taking any of the AP courses... they don't even offer calculus so the selection seems limited.

The amount of anger of who they hired for new principal, athletic director, head football coach, etc. was sad. They did everything by race - 50%-50%. Pathetic. The Delta is such a waste on this country.

So, this girl and her mom are learning what millions of people have felt when passed over for an affirmative action hire/admission/contract?
Millions?
where? White women benefit from AA more than any other group.

So are you saying that you have seen the court filing and the school did not use the extra grade weighting for honors and AP classes so the white student could be co-valedictorian? Where did you see this? If this is true then . If not, then momma is ignorant

Crazy how y'all automatically side with the defendant even in LIGHT of mississippis horrible horrible track record on race...
I think everyone here would think that if the story as told were tru, it's be a horrible thing. But we just have a hard time believing anyone would do something so egregious.
I've had a former teacher on national news because he made racist comments. I knew the guy well since he taught with my dad. Last person I'd think of getting into that mess. Turns out it was all BS made up by a handful of students and their parents. Other minority students stood up for him. Think he's the principal now actually.
Don't recall him being exonerated anywhere though .
Not trying to say bad things don't happen, but people jump the gun and run with unsubstantiated stories more than real ones. It does nothing but harm the cause. When it comes to blatant calculation of numbers, I feel like the school will hold the trump card here. They have nothing to gain if they don't, so why would they do this....just to keep a black valedictorian down???

Side note.
Isn't it awesome how the media has spread this far and wide despite not having figured out if it's even true?
One wonders. If it turns out to be shite, What percentage of people who believe this story will EVER know it turned out false?

For mom's characterization to be true, we would have to believe some hilariously unlikely stuff in 2017

The article says she filed suit this week, yet graduated in 2016. The judge should tell her to go frick herself and get a life.

Her child was named validictorian and got to speak at graduation and that is her take away.

What an absolutely miserable waste of oxygen.

said her daughter was forced to speak after the white valedictorian at graduation
Speaking following others at graduation usually signifies increased importance of the speaker.

A black Mississippi high school graduate sued her school district this week after being forced to share valedictorian status with a white student who had a lower GPA.
Ah...the roles are now reversed. How many white kids have had to share their valedictorian with a lesser deserving black kid?

I still don't get where she is discriminated against. She is still Valedictorian. She can still put that on her resume. What am I missing?

The Mississippi school district denied the allegations, calling the lawsuit “frivolous.” Both students had the same GPA, Jamie Jacks, an attorney for the district, wrote.
Which is true? if the black girl had the higher GPA, she deserved the honor. If they had the same GPA then they should have shared it. The article contradicts itself, though.

For years the school district has allowed students to choose which middle and high schools they want to attend.
I guess unless it's forced bussing and building new schools (all on the taxpayer's dime) then it doesn't count for some.
