Man, at Tech you didn't ever want a take home test because it was a license for the prof to really shaft you.

This was my experience as well, especially in grad school.

I sure as frick would have preferred an in-class final to a take-home pretty much any day of the week. Professors at good schools will make take-homes so hard (and you will never find the answer on Google or your notes no matter how hard you try) that it can become a farce. I suspect that some of these Berkeley professors are smirking and thinking to themselves "OK, home slice, try me".

I stopped right there. I graduated (BSME) with 4.0 in my Lib Arts classes even though I only had a legit A in one of them. The rest of them, I only needed the Jedi mind trick to talk my way into one.

Tell them what they want to hear is all you have to do. That crap doesn't work in Thermo.

I hate to harp on this because it's so cliche and overused, but here it truly is applicable. This is the product of a society that for the last 30 years or so has neglected to teach children about the reality of inequality, winners, losers and the process of self-improvement.

All human beings are not equal. All human beings in certain societies are, in theory, equal under the law. That does not mean that my athletic skills are equivalent to those of Lebron James. He will beat me every time in a pickup game precisely because we are NOT equivalent on a basketball court, and the same realities are why I will beat him every time in a spelling bee.

Some are inherently more intelligent than others. Some people, no matter how hard they study, will never succeed in certain academic settings. Some people can succeed but will never be as good as others in the same setting.

To some degree we can all improve. I can practice basketball long enough that I will be better than I was, but only to a point. I Will still never be an NBA player. Likewise, MOST cognitively intact people can study hard enough to graduate high school but many cannot withstand the rigors of higher education. Among those who can, some will never do as well as others. The process of self-improvement should be encouraged but with the caveat that we all have a ceiling in every area.

However, what we've instead done is attempted to pursued our youth that you can be anything you want to be if you work hard enough...and then remove all incentive for them to work hard by equating everyone and taking measures to ensure those who area in inferior in a given area aren't forced to deal with that reality. So you combine the lie of equality with self-defeating ideologies that don't promote the improvement required to achieve the supposed equality. It's complete and total nonsense.

I am trying hard to imagine the mind of anyone who could down vote this.

Take home exams in engineering sucked. They always took way more time than what it would take to prepare for an in class exam.

wonder if you can make a shaft test in queer studies

Actually the worst one I had was an in person open book text. Prof even let us bring in laptops to the test. It was supposed to take 1.5 hours to take. He gave us an additional 2 hours to take it. No one finished. By the time we handed it in I got through 5 of 9 problems. Ended up with a 45% which was curved to an A.

No, the lost continent of Atlantis which no one has ever found. One of them could get lucky and find the Atlantic Ocean by guessing.

At what point in time will employers stop hiring Berkeley grads? I know I wouldn't give the resume a second look for the off chance it's one of the many trouble causing loons.

Something similar to Missouri happen at tOSU a few years back and the president Handled it like an adult

quote:

If you are students, and I think the vast majority of you are, I want you to understand that you are violating the student code of conduct. As dictated to me by [university president] Dr. Drake 15 minutes ago to me on the phone, we have chosen to try to work with you this evening because we respect you. This is your university. And we want to have dialogue. We want the dialogue to extend beyond tonight. But if you refuse to leave, then you will be charged with a student code of conduct violation. And I’m telling you this now because I want you to have good thought and careful consideration. If you’re here at 5 a.m. we will clear the building and you will be arrested. And we will give you the opportunity to go to jail for your beliefs. Our police officers will physically pick you up, take you to a paddywagon, and take you to be jail.

Hit the nail on the head there. I graduated with a BSPE, otherwise that statement is 100% true.

My professor would have loved that. NEVER ask for a take-home exam. It was unreal.

It's the equivalent of pitching a temper tantrum. My 4 year old does it to see what she can get away with. Then I lay down the law and she gives up.

We can blame the kids, but as a teacher, I can assure you this comes from years of coddling by parents.
