Conservatives "own" the issue of patriotism, much like leftists "own" the issue of racism.
Charges of racism stick a little easier to conservatives because of past actions and some current positions that could seem to an uncharitable and intellectually dishonest analyst to be racist.

The vast majority of conservatives are not racist. The vast majority of leftists are patriotic. And of course you have racist leftists and unpatriotic conservatives.
But neither wants to give much credit to the other side lest they loose control of a very potent political cudgel to bludgeon the other side.
