Am I the only conservative who doesn't mind that Confederate statues are being removed?

My attachment to the statues is purely connected to being a New Orleans native. I grew up with them, especial Lee (Lee Circle) and Beauregard. I saw that statue every time my mom took me to City Park. The Davis statue has no meaning for me and I have a dislike for Jefferson Davis as a person.
I have no romantic notions about the Confederacy and I don't like the idea of Confederate statues in this day and age. I totally get why blacks especially would want them removed.
Am I alone on this?

My problem with it is that in a city with so many problems the mayor is focusing his political capital on something so petty.

As to the OP:
I despise any historic statues being removed, regardless if they are confederate or not. A major part of their historic relevance is their location. The fact that all of this bullshite is being done for no other reason than grandstanding in the political arena makes it even worse.

The whole issue here is that Mitch Landrieu is seemingly taking this on himself. No input from the legislature or anyone else.
The statues should be placed in a museum at the very least.
To me, you are walking a fine line when you start removing history. Where do you draw the line? The next push will be "all streets named after confederates!"

My ancestors all fought for the North. I think it's silly and I don't think some people should be able to cleanse history. I also think it is very silly to apply modern day progressive values to people that lived a hundred or more years ago and view their entire lives and accomplishments through that narrow prism.

I understand what you are saying. With that said it seems silly as a strategy to fix whatever it is that is trying to be fixed....wish life was so simple. But then again, naming boulevards after MLK seems kind of silly...don't need that to remember him much less his accomplishments

I definitely don't have a strong reaction to it overall.
On the one hand I think pulling them down isn't going to do anyone any good, other than people who just want to make some white people mad. This I have little sympathy for, because people should just have better things to do with their lives than this kind of stupid SJW crusade.
On the other hand, the crap about "destroying history" and calling them "veteran monuments" strikes me as complete hysterical bullshite.
Like most social debates, this issue just makes me conclude "I hate you all".

You can put most of them in a museum... but not Robert E. Lee. He is one of the greatest AMERICANS in our history, and all Americans owe him a debt of gratitude that we were able to heal as a nation as quickly as we did following 4 years of carnage.

Depends on the monument. Liberty Place and Bouregard should never have come down as they are a part of the history of New Orleans. Jeff Davis? Eh, I don't have a problem with that other than the fact that removing the monuments was a massive waste of money.
Liberty Place now commemorates the police officers who died fighting AGAINST the White League to preserve the Reconstruction era government which enforced equal rights for African Americans but voided the right to vote for Confederate Veterans. Both sides were fighting for suffrage. The battle marked the end of federal occupation of the South despite the defeat of the White League.
Beauregard was born in neighboring St. Bernard Parish and was buried not far from his statue. He fought for equal rights for blacks, integration of public schools, and founded the New Orleans Streetcar system. He's a native son and should never have been taken down.
