African-American as a generic term for blacks

African-American:
Words matter and accuracy matters and this phrase has always bothered me because its use requires information that is not always available - nationality.
When a city is described as XX percent African-American, have they removed the blacks that aren't American?
I recently heard a sports commentator refer to the racial makeup of Major League Baseball. He used white, Hispanic, Asian and African-American.
Only one of those requires knowledge of nationality. Black or African would be more accurate. A black Dominican is not African American.

I love the way African Americans from England talk.

After sending in our genetic samples, Of course we have the same African starting point but genealogically, I'm way more African than my black buddy. My family immigrated From Sweden and his from Ireland.

I have met a true AA, born there now an American, he was white. That is why I never use the term AA, it's not accurate, that would be like calling myself a European American because my ancestors came from there.

I have black friends that despise the term "African-American". They claim it's embarrassing to to be considered from Africa.

I have an all encompassing word for them

Another thread where TD takes issue with "African American" yet never has an issue with "Asian American".

When has "Asian American" every been a topic of the conversation? Like the Americans of Asian descent who can't get into prestigious universities because they're not the right shade of diverse?

Asian American makes more sense because usually either they were born some where in an Asian country or their parents were. Where as black people American ancestry goes back to America as long ago as white ancestry. We don't say European American why should we say African American? I know that some white people call themselves Irish or Italian American when their ancestors were really Americans but they do that more for partying purposes.

I never use AA to describe a black American. And I don't expect to be called European American or even Caucasian.

one of my good buddies is a black guy and he doesn't care for it either. He says he's American...something like 5th generation or some shite and that should be good enough to be simply American. Says it should be obvious that he's black, no need to be descriptive about it. All I could say is "Word"

If asked, would they call themselves "Englishmen" or "African-English"?

The term was concocted by liberal douchebags.
Africa is a continent. Libya, Egypt, etc are on that continent. Are Egyptians or Libyans, etc living or born in this country "African-Americans"? Should we call the generations of Dutch living or born in South Africa "African-Americans"? Why not?
