54 Months: Record Stretch of 7.5%+ Unemployment

quote:

Since January 2009, when Barack Obama was inaugurated as president, the United States has seen 54 straight months with the unemployment rate at 7.5 percent or higher, which is the longest stretch of unemployment at or above that rate since 1948, when the Bureau of Labor Statistics started calculating the national unemployment rate.

Today, BLS reported that the seasonally adjusted national unemployment rate for June was 7.6 percent, the same it was in May.

CBO also estimated that the stimulus had the impact in the last quarter of 2012 of lowering “the unemployment rate by between 0.1 percentage points and 0.4 percentage points.”

That was a great present GW Bush left. Its legacy still lingers, although the bleeding has stopped. Live in whatever fantasy land you want to...I'm sure in your eyes the economy just tanked on the day he took office. Disingenuous or willfully stupid- either is to be expected here.

Talk about disingenuous and willfully stupid - the issue is the length and lack of recovery not the initial decline.

Is this the 'Summer of Recovery' that old Uncle Joe promised? Or was that another summer?

Are we waiting on delivery of shovels for the 'shovel ready jobs' that Obama promised and then said never existed?

Big Apple, how long will it take to correct Bush's mistakes? You would think the greatest president ever could at least have eased the economic woes in 4 years. After his second term is over and the economy is still shite, will you feel the same about your demigod?

Why did you skip over Bill? The GWB recession of '01 got started on his watch. The fact that you include Reagan to the list proves you are one hackish rube with no independant thought outside of someone elses BS.

The economy was tanking when BO took office. He just managed to keep it down afterwards.

Actually, I blame FDR for many of the problems we are having today.

No this one was supposed to be a disaster because of the sequester.

re: 54 Months: Record Stretch of 7.5%+ Unemployment
I don't know- but I do know it is improving. Let's take a look at the Bush legacy Obama has had to recover from...

One totally optional war in Iraq
No child left behind
prescription drug benefits
All while cutting taxes and revenue

Now-Obama has failed IMO in these aspects:

Wall Street left largely untouched and unpunished and the culture is still in place.
Lack of infrastructure projects nationwide to provide more jobs.
Allowing Bush tax cuts for above 200k income to extend while spending stimulus(which was misappropriated as well IMO)

The economy is improving, but Obama's languid policies and the sequester are contracting it at the moment. The real estate market has been in overdrive since January in most markets. He no demigod by any means and his faults are on display- but he a huge improvement over Bush. Left to the Republican policy we would have been much worse off.

What party controlled Congress for the last 2 years of Bush's time in office?

Good. I want revenue to the Federal government to dry up so that more of that monster dies on the vine.

Stopped reading right there. I love all these hardcore liberals who say "Obama hasn't done enough" or "He has been a disappointment". That is what they say on message boards. In reality, they jerk off to him daily and retweet every stupid little thing he says.

That's right, all Bush's fault. Unemployment would be even worse than it as been if not for Obama.

Forward!

My God, I never thought about this, but you're right! How will our economy ever recover from an estimated $140 million a year that, on aggregate, states and municipalities will have to account for?
