Die Hard 3...

Fill the 5, then fill the 3 from the 5.

Empty the 3, then pour the remaining 2 in the 5 to the 3.

Fill the 5, then top off the 3. There's now 4 gallons in the 5

1. Fill 5 litre up and use that to fill the 3 litre, leaving 2 litres in the 5 litre bucket.

2. Discard the 3 litre bucket.

3. Pour the 2 litres into the 3 litre bucket.

4. Fill 5 litre up again and fill the 3 litre bucket, leaving 4 in the 5 litre bucket.

5. Realize this was a waste of time and buy a 4 litre bucket.

1. Fill 5L and pour it into 3L, you now have 2L left in 5L bucket.
2. Pour out the water in 3L bucket and replace it with 2L of the 5L bucket.
3. Fill 5L bucket again and then pour out water into the 2L in 3L bucket. You have 4L left in the 5L bucket.

ETA: I'm too slow.

Fill the 5. Pour it into the 3, then dump the 3. Then pour the remainder of the 5 (2 l) into the 3. Refill the 5. Use that to top off the 3 (1l), and what you have left in the 5 bucket is 4 l.

My way was the third way.

Stock pots are basically perfect cylinders anyway.

And if you're not using this amount water to cook something, the what the frick are you really doing?

It may have already been said, but...

Fill up the 3 liter bucket, pour it into the 5 liter bucket. Fill up the three liter bucket again, pour into the 5 liter bucket until filled. Dump the five liter bucket. Put the one liter remaining in the 3 liter bucket into the 5. Fill up the 3 again, pour it into the 5. Done.

ETA - WalkingTurtles Our brains work the same way.

Fill the 3 liter full, dump that in the 5 liter bucket. Fill the 3 liter full again and dump that in the 5 liter bucket. Catch the extra 1 liter the pours out in the 5 liter bucket.(You need to be very quick like the guy on X-Men.) Pour the 5 liter bucket out, pour the 1 liter in the 5 liter bucket. Fill the 3 liter bucket up again and pour it in the 5 liter bucket......

Profit!!!!

Fill the 3 liter up and pour into 5 liter. Fill up 3 liter again and pour until 5 is now full. That leaves exactly 1 liter left in the 3 liter container. Empty the 5 container and pour the 1liter left in the 3 container into the 5 container. Fill up the 3 container again and pour into the 5. Now you have exactly 4 liters in the 5.

Okay, this is what I meant to say.

Fill the 3 litre. Pour into 5 litre. Refill 3 litre. Pour into 5 litre until full. This leaves you with 1 litre in the 3 litre. Empty 5 litre. Pour the 1 litre into the 5 litre. Refill the 3 litre and pour it into the 5 litre. You now have 4 litres in the 5 litre bucket.

Wasn't this or something similar in the movie Die Hard with a Vengeance?

ETA: I see both my points have been made.

As I was going to St Ives

I met a man with seven wives

Every wife had seven sacks

Every sack had seven cats

Every cat had seven kittens

Kittens, cats, sacks, wives

How many were going to St Ives?

Fill the 5 liter bucket. Dump 3 liters into the 3 liter bucket. Now you have two liters in the 5 liter bucket. Dump out the 3 liter bucket. Pour the two liters from the 5 liter bucket into the 3 liter bucket. Now refill the 5 liter bucket. Now pour from the 5 liter bucket into the 3 liter bucket until it is filled. You will have 4 liters left in the 5 liter bucket.

Figured it out all by myself. :patshimselfontheback:
