Alighty!!!! a few months back I requested some info / help / advice on a build. I was given awesome tips and wonderful advice.
Here's the build
CPU : AMD FX-8350 Black Edition
GPU : Radeon R9 290
HDD : Seagate 1TB
MB : ASRock MB-970EX4 Socket AM3+/ AMD 970/ AMD Quad CrossFireX& nVidia SLI/ SATA3&USB3.0/ A&GbE/ ATX Motherboard
Power : EVGA Supernova 750w
RAM : Crucial Ballistix 2x4GB
Case : Sentey BX1-4237
Optics : ASUS
Heat Sink : Master Cooler Hyper 212
Looked it up on PC Part Picker and the only note was the MB size issue with the case. It had no info on the case. Case looks bad arse Btw.
Should I still get an SSD? MB is due in tomorrow. I shall build and post pics

They're so cheap right now, so you might as well

To each his own but it looks like an ugly piece of junk to me. I don't think I have ever heard of that brand.
Also, you really shouldn't have gotten a 970 mobo with an 8350. 990 is really the only way to go.

This shouldn't even be a question, should be a requirement for any decent new PC build.

SSD is a must, if you don't have one you don't miss it, but once you get on you will wonder how you ever lived without it. Get the case you want, you are the one that looks at it everyday.

I agree and I wasn't trying to be a dick but I am cautious buying brands I never heard of and have seen some cheaply made cases with bad airflow because they would rather look space age with LEDs everywhere.

That's why I have my master cooler case, not great looking, but incredible reviews

Boy did he ever downgrade.

Would have put a dent in your e-cred for sure.

That mobo doesn't have the balls for the cpu. Like stout said, go 990fx. Otherwise you're limiting the cpu and risking mobo failure.

He didn't get the worst 970 board for that CPU at least. Just can't overclock, and in any game that's CPU limited (reaching close to 100% usage) he might see a little bit of throttling. But like $20 more would get a 990FX with none of those risks or limitations.

The vrms on the 970 won't handle that cpu long term.

You were using an extreme 3, right? And the mobo failed after OCing?
Can't make a blanket statement on a chipset regarding VRMs. Phase designs and VRM chips vary. Digital vs. analog, low-level drivers used, mosfet count, types of inductors used, and manufacturer (NXP and Vishay plus a crapton more). There are 4+1 phase designs that can handle more power than 8+2 phase designs. None of that shite is standardized and not even consistent across motherboard brands, chipsets, price points, or sockets, so there are people with much more time and expertise than I have who painstakingly scour data sheets and personally examine individual boards to classify and compile VRM information for overclockers. Not sure if that info/spreadsheet is still floating around or is up to date though. But I did find this general 'recommendation' sheet for AM3+ boards.

EDIT: Found the super-extensive spreadsheet: LINK
Unfortunately, it's only for Intel boards, and for some reason it's an image file, which is the worst format for this amount of data.

Being a noob in PC builds, I purchased a Gigabyte GA-97x Gaming motherboard but soon realized that it wasn't compatible with the AMD FX. I thought I was saving some $$ lol.
Rookie mistake and so, since I'm not made of money, decided to get the compatible motherboard instead of the compatible processor. Will upgrade processor at a later time.

I was using a 990fx extreme 3. Asrock supported the 8350 on the 90fx at launch, then quietly removed from the supported cpu list for that board because of vrm failure.
I can't imagine a 970 would handle it better than a 990.
Of course, my experience could be very rare.

A 990 vs a 970 is like $20 in most cases.

According to that long data sheet picture, ASRock uses an entirely different mosfet tech and manufacturer for the Extreme4 vs Extreme3 (at least looking at Z-chipset boards), and there appears to be a fairly significant difference there. The 970 and 990FX extreme3 boards have the same phase count, and I wouldn't be surprised if they both have mosfets from the same low-grade manufacturer.

Didn't look at it
Maybe the extreme 4 will handle it better. For the OP's sake, I hope so.
