The sawbones recommended that I add flax seed to my diet due to my last lipid panel. I started mixing ground flax seed into my gumbo and soup. It thickens them and adds a slightly slimy feel(much like okra) when introduced into a hot liquid. Just a PSA for the masses.

What makes it healthier than a ground up sassafras leaf?

I'm not putting flax meal into my gumbo, but it is a great addition to smoothies, to baked goods (a few T will not change a bread or cookie recipe much at all), and sprinkled over oatmeal or yogurt. I add whole flax seeds to my homemade granola. You can also replace eggs in cookies/cakes with a "flax egg" mixture of flax meal & water: mix 1 T flax meal with 2.5 T water, let it stand for 5 minutes, then use as recipe directs for the egg.

Why not just mix the flax with a little water and down it instead of screwing up a gumbo?

why don't you just take a tablespoon of flax with some water instead of potentially messing up a perfectly good dish?

Put it in your smoothies for breakfast, along with some ground chia seed.
