He was probably the best friend the South had in 1865. Love him or hate him, he was the best hope for seamless transition for the South back into the Union.

I agree, his assassination paved the way for a punishment based reconstruction.

Yep, I just don't see the Radical Republicans going against Lincoln the way they went against Andrew Johnson.

If only they would have shot him sooner.

It's remarkable how few people know this.

I'm sure one of our many resident history buffs can help me out.. How was JWB able to just walk right into the presidents booth so easily and shoot him at point blank range? Where the frick was any type of security??

Should we reenact the shooting? Who should stand in for Abe?

He slayed the frick out of some vampires.

Good on him.

The bodyguard went to a bar to drink during intermission I think.

If true, you would think the POTUS would have more than 1 bodyguard.

True, it was just a different time. I don't think the Secret Service began protecting the President until after McKinley was assassinated. I guess 3 assassinations in less than 50 years were enough.

Things were a lot different back then. There was no such thing as the Secret Service or FBI. You have to remember that up to that point nothing like this had ever happened other than an unsuccessful attempt 30 years before on Andrew Jackson where the would-be assassin had not one, but two pistols misfire thus allowing Old hickory to beat the hell out of him with his walking stick.

It was like Brad Pitt going to see the president.

Also something like he only had two guards and one was sleeping.

That's actually a really good analogy. I believe Booth was one of the biggest and most famous actors in the country at that time.

Well records at that time weren't very reliable so the information that we do have has to be taken with a grain of salt. Most historians agree that Lincoln was indeed shot and the date is pretty well accepted. Whether or not this Booth actor had anything to do with it will remain the topic of speculation for centuries as no one will ever know for sure. How or why anyone would ever want to shoot a president is also not understood but many speculate that Booth (or whoever committed the actual murder) was acting on behalf of a religious cult. Obviously we'll never know for sure, but it's fun to speculate on stuff like this.

Lincoln also did not care to be "set apart" from the people. This is a people's president. He felt that the taxpayers were paying for the white house so they should be able to come and go as they please. Many times people would camp out on the white house grounds or even inside the white house just to speak with the president. It became such a problem that people were actually vandalizing the white house in order to take home souvenirs.

He would ride his horse up and down the road without body guards and walk around without them. With the way the war was going, he was not going to please everyone. By continuing with his routine he was bound to be shot eventually.
