With all this talk about Mariota(and a future QB for the saints in general) I decided to post some prospects for next year.

The 2016 class is much deeper and talented(IMO):

quote:

Connor Cook*, QB, Michigan State
Height: 6-4. Weight: 218.
Projected 40 Time: 4.85.
Projected Round (2015): 1-2.
2/9/15: Cook completed 58 percent of his passes in 2014 for 3,214 yards with 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

League sources identified Cook as a potential high first-round pick. He needs improve certain aspects of his game to meet that grade though, mainly accuracy. Cook has proven to NFL evaluators that he has a big arm, pocket presence, the mobility to avoid rushers and roll out, and the ability to make some precision throws. Cook plays in a pro-style system and has shown steady improvement with his ability to function out of the pocket while working through his progressions.

Cook has oftenn thrown the ball better than his numbers illustrate. He can make some amazingly accurate throws into extremely tight windows for completions downfield, but also has some inconsistency with his accuracy on the routine passes and when going deep down the middle. Cook has to improve his footwork, which in turn will help his accuracy.

Highlight

quote:

Cardale Jones*, QB, Ohio State
Height: 6-5. Weight: 250.
Projected 40 Time: 4.75.
Projected Round (2016): 1-2.
2/9/15: Jones put on a display in 2014 after entering the starting lineup behind Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett. Jones has great size and a cannon for an arm. In his three starts, he completed 61 percent of his passes for 860 yards with seven touchdowns and two interceptions. Jones has a ton of upside and it will be fun to watch him in 2015, assuming he wins the starting job over J.T. Barrett.

quote:

Christian Hackenberg, QB, Penn State
Height: 6-4. Weight: 234.
Projected 40 Time: 4.87.
Projected Round (2016): 1-2.
2/9/15: Hackenberg completed 56 percent of his passes in 2014 for 2,677 yards with 12 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He played better than the numbers indicate as his supporting cast was a huge liability, including an awful offensive line. Hackenberg closed out the 2014 season with a huge comeback overtime win over Boston College, completing 34-of-50 for 371 yards and four touchdowns.

Hackenberg was the star recruit for Bill O'Brien and proved the hype legit during an impressive freshman season that saw him named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Hackenberg completed 59 percent of his passes for 2,955 yards with 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 2013. He also ran for four touchdowns. Hackenberg has great size, a strong arm, pocket presence and is very advanced in his field vision.

WalterFootball.com has heard from sources in the NFL that Hackenberg could end up being an elite quarterback prospect

Freshman Highlights

quote:

Dak Prescott*, QB, Mississippi State
Height: 6-2. Weight: 230.
Projected 40 Time: 4.69.
Projected Round (2015): 1-3.
2/9/15: Prescott completed 61 percent of his passes in 2014 for 3,449 yards with 27 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He averaged 4.7 yards per carry for 986 yards with 14 scores on the ground. Prescott had an underwhelming game against Alabama, but that was really the only game of the season in which he struggled.

Prescott's play has been somewhat reminiscent of Tim Tebow at Florida because Prescott is playing in the same offense for Tebow's former offensive coordinator, Dan Mullen, the Mississippi State head coach. Like Tebow, Prescott needs to improve his pocket passing and accuracy for the NFL.

In 2013, Prescott completed 58 percent of his passes for 940 yards with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Personal: Son of Nathan and the late Peggy Prescott. Majoring in educational psychology

2014 highlights

quote:

Jonathan Goff, QB, California
Height: 6-4. Weight: 210.
Projected 40 Time: 4.69.
Projected Round (2016): 1-3.
2/8/15: Goff enjoyed a breakout 2014 season. The sophomore completed 62 percent of his passes for 3,973 yards with 35 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Goff displayed real pocket-passing potential while playing with a less-than-ideal supporting cast. He became the starter as a freshman in 2013 and completed 60 percent of his passes for 3,508 yards with 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Goff/Cal Highlights

quote:

Cody Kessler, QB, USC
Height: 6-1. Weight: 210.
Projected 40 Time: 4.85.
Projected Round (2015): 2-4.

Had 39 TDs and 5 Ints

quote:

Kevin Hogan, QB, Stanford
Height: 6-4. Weight: 220.
Projected 40 Time: 4.79.
Projected Round (2015): 3-5.

quote:

STRENGTHS: Passes the eye test with a broad-shouldered, well-built frame for the position. Operates in a pro-style offense that will translate well to the NFL. Hogan has good accuracy to all levels with especially impressive touch on deep passes when he has the room to step into his throw.
Hogan has been well protected by the elite talent blocking in front of him but when pressure does force him off his spot, he is willing to step up in the pocket, exhibiting poise, toughness and quick decision-making to either throw or run.

Like Andrew Luck before him, Hogan is faster (and stronger) than he looks, making him a formidable threat on the run. Stanford's scheme calls for lots of play-action, boots and throwing on the move and deep shots -- staples of a pro-style offense that suit Hogan's athleticism and strong arm well.

Does a very good job of using the talent around him to push the ball downfield. He is a big athlete with a big arm and the coaches have raved about his football acumen and strong practice habits.

WEAKNESSES: Elongated delivery. Struggles with accuracy on deep passes. Lacks great mobility that is increasingly valued in the NFL. Stanford's power running game doesn't afford Hogan as many opportunities to rack up passing numbers as other top quarterback prospects.

Hogan flashes enticing talent but he struggled in surprising road losses at Utah and Southern Cal a year ago. Considering the losses along the offensive line and that the meat of Stanford's tough 2014 schedule is also on the road, Hogan's poise will be tested in 2014.

COMPARES TO: Philip Rivers, Chargers - Elongated wind-up that will earn plenty of criticism in the pre-draft process but like Rivers, Hogan's instincts, accuracy and velocity are enough to overcome the quirky delivery.

quote:

Patrick Towles, QB, Kentucky
Height: 6-5. Weight: 238.
Projected 40 Time: 4.85.
Projected Round (2015): 2-3.

Next year's crop really doesn't look much different from this year's.
If Mich. State makes another run, Connor Cook will be in the discussion for the 1st pick. So, he is, more than likely, off our radar. Same can be said for Jones.
Hackenberg is this year's Petty.

BTW... You know what all those prospects have in common? They all come from a spread offense.

No no they don't

At least 3-4 do not

Hackenberg/Cook/Kessler/Hogan all play in pro style systems

Next years QB crop has a lot more to choose from and I didn't even list them all.

I'd be in on Hogan depending on the type of year he has. Would be good in Payton's offense.

Sign of the times that will influence NFL offenses moving forward. Hard to believe, QBs drafted that have not taken a snap from under center since the youth game. It is inevitable. Good for the QBs, cause the need for dry of a mobile QB will increase dramatically.

Have you actually watched Hogan play? He is awful.

Hackenberg & Kessler have huge potential but Hackenberg has to have a bounce back 2015 season.

Cook & Goff are meh. Prescott, Jones & Trevone Boykin are spread quarterbacks & it will be the same thing once again said about these as what is said of all spread quarterbacks.

Towles is an intriguing guy. He flashed last season & I'm really interested to see how he progresses this upcoming season.

I doubt he wins it over Barret.

Honestly, I'm surprised he didn't announce for the draft this year.

I'll give you Cook, Mich. State plays mostly from a Pro Set.
Penn State is definitely the spread.

I agree. I'm pulling for Hackenberg. I appreciate the level of his commitment to his goals and ideals. You just don't see that much today.

He could have gone just about anywhere in the country and he decided to take on a dismantled team and make the best of it.
He voluntarily ran into a burning house!

I don't see any good QBs being available at pick 32.

We went through so many years without a QB that I don't even want to contemplate the Saints without Drew Brees. Why are we in a hurry to replace him? There are no Andrew Luck's in the near future.

No one wants drew to just disappear but it's inevitable. You have to have a plan. The NFL is a business and crazy stuff happens. If you really don't want it to be like the years before Drew then you have to be prepared for the next step. Peyton has an heir. Brady has an heir. Gotta get with the times

It's called salary cap. You have a 7-9 team paying the QB $26.4M this year and $27.4M scheduled for next year. No body wants Brees gone but his time is coming to an end...he's going to be 37 years old next season.
BTW...There's no Andrew Luck on the foreseeable horizon. If you're waiting for that, we're in deep shite.

I'm not sure the Nittany Lions changed their offense much from what they ran under Bill O'Brien with James Franklin. O'Brien definitely ran a pro style offense which is what made Penn State attractive to Hackenberg in the first place.

I agree. The fact he stay committed throughout the turmoil speaks to his character. The truth is if Kessler & Hackenberg have big 2015 seasons, both will be top 10 picks next draft. If we make the playoffs this season, it's going to take a fortune to move up to get either.

Connor Cook is a Kirk Cousins clone. He lives off of play action from the Spartans power run game but he doesn't possess the ability to put a team on his back with his arm. Hogan is flat out garbage. Too many lows in his game & not enough highs. I assume people see he plays for Stanford & think he is good because he was Andrew Luck's predecessor but they would sadly be mistaken. Even Stanford fans have their reservations about Hogan.

Nobody is trying to run Drew out of town but the organization HAS to begin to start looking towards life past Brees. Every year that passes without a legit predecessor on the roster, is a year lost that a young guy could be being groomed by Payton without the pressure of having to play the young quarterback.

Payton has stressed following the Patriots blueprint & the Patriots are doing exactly what they should in terms of prepping for life after Tom Brady. They drafted Ryan Mallett in the 3rd round in 2011. After coming to the decision that he wouldn't be the predecessor to Brady, they traded him to Houston for a 7th rounder. The Pats would have fetched a better trade pick for Mallett had he not bombed in the preseason games they tried to showcase him in.

quote:

The Patriots have been actively trying to move Mallett, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract. The former third-round pick has seen little action behind Tom Brady, attempting just four passes since 2011.

The Patriots hoped to use the preseason as a showcase for Mallett, even starting him in the team's first preseason game. Mallett struggled, however, potentially hurting his trade value. He played just one series in New England's preseason finale, another sign the team still had Mallett on the market.

LINK

Last draft, they took Jimmy Garoppolo in the 2nd round. If they determine in the next 2 seasons that Garoppolo isn't the future, they will flip him for a draft pick to one of the many quarterback hungry teams. If Garoppolo has good showings in the preseason games, he'll be able to be moved for a mid round pick. It's a win-win opportunity for the Pats & the Saints need to look at following what New England is doing here. Teams needing a quarterback would be lined up to take a Payton coached, Brees influenced young back up who was highly regarded in his respective draft. This is why I'm on the bandwagon to take Bryce Petty. In 2 years if he isn't progressing as Payton feels fit, the Saints could flip him & possibly get the 2nd or 3rd rounder used to draft him, back for a future draft. If Payton likes what he has in Petty by then, he will have someone who is already familiar with the system in place when a decision has to be made on Brees.

quote:

Why are we in a hurry to replace him?

Because you are thinking like a fan with your heart, instead of like a NFL front office official. Sometimes tough decisions have to be made with the long term outlook for an organization. Like I said in the beginning, nobody wants to or is ready for Brees to be gone but NFL history shows us that even future Hall of Fame QB's end up finishing their careers elsewhere.

If the Saints trade down and pick up some draft picks then with the last one now the 230th pick it would be good to draft a Qb this year because with a weak QB class to get as good a ufda QB as Griffin in 2013 would be a long shot. Then next year use the 2nd round pick on a QB.However it would be good to draft one this year for if Griffin an to me its 50-50 beats out McCown an hes cut then you need a half way ok QB for the 3rd string on the practice squad.
