Can you imagine if a company CEO went to his Board and said: "Revenue is down this year so we should just close the doors." How quick would they show that guy the door?
Thank you. This is my biggest beef.

It is easily the most important session in history as it concerns the future of LSU. Pay attention. Make some noise. Btw, Robert Mann rips the Board of Supervisors a new one. They're all Jindal puppets with their heads so far up Piyush's arse that they have no idea what is really happening. BOS should resign.
Your boy McKay ripped them a new one. The numbers Alexander is spouting are completely off base. He knows it. You parroting this stuff is ridiculous.
BTW-This Mann dude shovels this crap while teaching two classes per year while being paid $128,000 a year by LSU.

State funding makes up 13% of LSU's budget. If LSU has to shut down ans cancel all their classes over a 7-10% budget cut, then they are doing it wrong. Sorry
Can you link me to LSU's budget? All I can find are expenses.

Colleges and Universities have already been cut by $700 million over Jindal's terms. This is simply the latest cut. Gotta love it when those who have already obtained their publicly subsidized education jump on the bandwagon to eliminate it for future students.
LSU's budget in 2008-2009 was $425 million.
LSU's budget in 2014-2015 was $455 million.
ETA:
General Fund expenditures on LSU have gone from $235 million to $108 million during that time (-$127 million)
LSU’s self-generated revenues have gone from $190 million to $347 million (+$157 million)
$157,000,000(USD)
-$127,000,000(USD)
$30,000,000 increase in additional funding since 2008.
Where are the cuts?

Yeah....lets see if Alexander's fear mongering and scare tactics worked. Because it has seemed to work on alot of people on this site.

I'm not talking about just schools. I'm talking about the whole budget deficit. We will need to raise taxes to get us out of this hole. Jindal has cut just about everything he could cut to keep the state government moving. The next governor has to bring revenue increases to the table.
I just read an article stating Louisiana doesn't have enough money to pay for the presidential primaries next year.
Actually what needs to happen is a Constitutional Convention. We need to get rid of our backwards system of cutting Education and Health Care and star again anew. There is some talk about having a Constitutional Convention (The last one we had was about 40 years ago, so it is definitely time for a new one).
Taxes don't need to be raised, we just need to put it all on the table and reallocate the money that we already have. We should also cut some services that are either money pits or things that the government just doesn't need to be in (which is a lot). Don't tell anyone in government that though, they want to keep all of their precious services.
The Louisiana state government grows by 2-3% a year. What are we getting out of that? It's time to gut the government and keep the few things we need it for (Public Safety, Prisons, Health Care and Education)

To be honest, one of the first things they need to take up this session is to change the state constitution that will allow the governor to cut other public servies outside of higher education and health care. It's stupid to me that those are the only two areas the governor is allow to touch during times of hardship. All services using public funds should be at the governor's disposal.
The state constitution will probably have to be re-written to accomplish this, and this governor cannot be trusted to handle that responsibly.

Should've been done almost a decade ago when he rode into office on a noble steed and a staggering electoral mandate. He had the opportunity to leave a LASTING impression on state government and state history...and he drained a half billion dollar deficit and six laned I-10 and I-12 in Baton Rouge instead.

If "they" were smart, they would consider bringing back the out of state alumni scholarship for the children of alumni.
There are numerous alums out there that no longer consider LSU because it is cost prohitive to pay OOS tuition when the same amount could be spent on TCU-type education.
But, waiving 75% of the OOS difference is a different deal.
And, would result in more kids paying a premium to attend when compared to in-state kids.

What is happening to the other universities in the state with these proposed cuts? ULL, ULM, UNO...
Alabama has their shite together. I can only hope LSU tries to follow their route as a university.

I don't like taxes, who does? But I have no desire to live in a place where no public school exists. That's 3rd world practice. Living in EBR I'm close to that now.

What was the % from the state before all the budget cuts started happening? We've been having these cuts for year's now, so I think it would be better to look at it from the beginning of the cuts

Part of the problem is that state expanded services with the influx of Katrina money. The Katrina money ran out at roughly the same time as the housing bubble burst in 2008. That's when it started as we know it now.
