Their survey monitors dependability after three years of service, meaning cars and trucks from the 2012 model year are highlighted in this report, which is comprised of responses from some 34,000 original owners.

We’ve already shared the best brands on this list, now it’s time to dredge the bottom. Here are the worst-performing automakers in J.D. Power’s latest VDS.

10. Volkswagen
9. Chrysler
8. Volvo
7. Ford
6. Hyundai
5. Dodge
4. MINI
3. Jeep
2. Land Rover
1. Fiat

That honor, rather dishonor, goes to Fiat, which posted a score of 273. That’s like saying every new car they sell has three defects that require attention! That figure is also almost double the industry average. Clearly this Italian brand has work to do.

Not surprising, at least to me, that there are 4 brands from the FCA company (Fiat Chrysler) on this list. I have had bad experiences with Jeep, Ford, and Hyundai products. I've never had a Land Rover or MINI though.

I guess Chevy/GMC is the best out there?

My Tacoma needs a new drive shaft and this is my second Toyota that has needed one. Toyota is overrated, imo.

So Chrysler Motors just builds PoS vehicles.

I drove jeep grand cherokees for 20 years. I just traded in a 12 yr old JGC last october. The brakes on all of them would need a rebuild (new rotors, master cylinder rebuild) after 20k miles. Other than that, no real problems.

I wouldn't say that the Toyota that I've owned was bad....but it wasn't great. That was a Camry though. The few studies that I've seen on pickup truck models rated the Tacoma within the top 1 or 2 trucks.

The link in the OP cites a study that includes the entire product line for each brand. Chrysler may have one or two good products, but if the rest of their line is crap, it's going to have a poor showing.

Chevrolet/GMC were well above average (and seem to be improving), but not in the top 5. According to the same source, Lexus and Buick are the best. Toyota, Cadillac, and Honda also did really well.

LINK

Notice that Ram was the only Chrysler/Fiat brand that scored above average....which isn't surprising since they only make trucks. Chrysler's core competency is apparently trucks. The Dodge brand is still around, but it does not include Chrysler's truck products.

Ford is another domestic maker that apparently makes bad products. According to the comments, they are getting worse as of late.

quote:

Ford posted a disappointing score of 188 problems per 100 vehicles, which means it’s fallen behind the industry average by 41. Especially troubling is that it’s doing even worse than it did last year. In 2014 the blue-oval brand measured 140.

I'm not surprised Fiat and Land Rover are the worst ones out there though. Ask anyone who owns one of those cars, and they'll likely back up the statistics posted.

I've owned an Avalon, Corolla, and a Tacoma. Both the Avalon and Tacoma needed new drive shafts. The Corolla was worth the money, but it had suspension issues.

I dunno. Toyota has marked up its price so much, and the quality just isn't that amazing.

I opted for an Accord last time instead of a Camry. So far, I'm happy about everything with the Honda except the road noise and the iffy paint job. The Toyota was quieter.

Maybe I should have looked at the Buick Regal instead.
