Here's Friday's game thread. Many posters were begging for Poche to be pulled BEFORE HE GAVE UP THE LEAD. Not hindsight, they were saying CPM waited to long after he gave up 2 runs, yet Paul Mainieri still rode him until UK had the lead.

like I said:
if some posters would be allowed to manage the pitchers, they would burn through the entire pen pulling pitchers at the first sign of trouble. It is entirely possible for a pitcher to have a bad inning, get out of it, then come back and pitch well again a couple more innings.

A) it's Friday, and every key reliever was 100% rested
B) it was a 2-0 game in the 7th inning, there was no room for error. One bad inning could beat you.
C) a short reliever throwing for 2-3 outs is not burning him for the weekend
D) So you wouldn't want to burn a pitcher on Friday? Paul Mainieri disagrees. He was fine with pitching his closer 4 innings. The same closer who had not thrown more than one inning in a game in 2 years.

I have to smile when I see one of the most vocal baseball critics on the forum suggesting others need "to shut up".

Of course it's possible, but Mainieri has a history of not pulling a pitcher until the damage is done. He also has a history of pulling a pitcher who is cruising for no other reason than his matchups fetish.

The seventh inning of a 2 run ball game is not the time to let your starter pitch out of a jam. Especially Poche who is known to struggle after about 80 pitches. You need someone warming or at least stretching down in the pen. If someone gets on base you pull him. If not, he finishes the inning.

He also has a history of making the right decisions on pitchers.

Only the bad decisions count, dummy.

I have no problem saying that Mainieri fricked up by not bunting.

Oh man that thread was great.

Look at my profile. I've been wearing that as a badge of honor sense the day of that thread.

It is not about bunting more, it is about bunting the right situations. When you are in tournament play and you are down one run in the bottom of the 9th with the lead off man on, your only goal is getting the lead off man in scoring position, because you can't win it until you tie it, it is literally that simple. It is truly like coloring in the spaces, the only thing you need to do is execute. Especially when runs are at a premium in a low scoring game like tonight. So you can put me at the top of the list then because that was a bad coaching decision plain and simple. Does that mean that PM is a bad coach, absolutely not. But he made a coaching mistake, and I can promise you he knows it.

This was after the College world series. PM didn't bunt Raph in the SECT and he hit into a double play. Then it was the same situation in Omaha... Raph hits into a double play. Maybe just a coincidence.
