You've heard this saying most of your life. How do you quantify "nothing"?
A. They came from a single parent household.
B. Their parents household income was less than $50,000.
C. They didn't attend a private school and paid their way through college.
D. Parent(s) were reprobates and did little to enhance their upbringing.

I would say a combo of C and D. But if C and D are true, B likely is as well.

Barely being able to afford to live.
I don't know, there's no specific answer.

D would be my answer with some of B

You can still have a wonderful single parent and have great principles instilled in you with these two things. There are nice public schools in this country believe it or not.
I believe "nothing" is a shitty home life/support system as you grow up.
ETA:
Single parent making 50k isn't poverty line bad. Their kid could go to a good public school and be very successful.
Its about the home life.

1 or 0 parents had a college education
"poor" family that lived a lower class lifestyle
wither grew up in a "ghetto" neighborhood or a poor rural area.
Attended public schools or was given needs or ability based scholarships to attend private schooling at little to no cost to the parents.

Y'all realize there are such things as good public schools, right?

Again, there are really good public schools in this country.

A millionaire I know of truly came from nothing. Raised in a shack where the only think holding it together were the termites holding hands and his mom raised over 20 foster children over the years just to get a check to make ends meet.

My mother grew up on a cotton farm in Lafayette picking cotton as one of 12 children. Her family didn't have money for Christmas presents. They got toothbrushes and shoes for Christmas. They never got candy, they never got to drink Coca-Cola. They scraped by on what they had and love for each other.
That my friend is nothing.

Private schools have nothing to do with it, at least not in Texas. Highland Park, Southlake Carroll, Houston Memorial, all public schools known for being in the richest and nicest parts of Dallas and Houston.
I went to a public school outside of Waco that was known to be predominantly white with above average household incomes, and most everyone I graduated with (about 140 other kids) were pretty well off. I.E. lived in a gated community, two story house, swimming pool, some sort of luxury car in the garage
My family was "upper middle class", I guess you could say, but neither of my parents went to college and I went to public school, so I don't think those two are usually a primary factor in this formula.

You all realize that the median income in this country is in the 45k range, right? That means that like half the country would "come from nothing".
I definitely don't feel like I came from nothing, and I didn't go to private school. I don't even feel like my mother came from nothing, and her family was definitely on the poor side. She had to help pay the bills in high school with a after school job, etc. She retired recently making more than my dad (who came from a family where both my grandparents attended college, and every single one of their kids attended college). She did a lot for herself, but it's not like she didn't have anything and had to fight to make it. She just did what you were supposed to and worked her way up. Nothing overly special.

Yeah, the OP is a bit naive.
Public schools can be damn fine schools, 50k is above median income, and single parents can definitely raise a child correctly and have them wanting nothing.
