Going to Chicago in June with my SO and her mom. What are some cool sites to see along the way other than Memphis and St. Louis?

Is your SO twelve? Is this one of those situations where if you aren't with her, she'll have to be accompanied by a flight attendant?

I would explain my situation to the people responsible for booking her trip and tell them to book you one and pay them for it. Only way possible that I can think of in order to get connecting seats. I see no reason why they could not accommodate this.

No, she's 24, just never flown before. She's used to driving everywhere, and rarely travels more than a few states away.

It's not a guarantee but when you book you ticket, see if you can pick your seat and have her call the airline to change her seat to be next to yours.

Check in for your flight early and the people at the gate can most likely switch some seats around for you.

Just giving you a hard time.

I would just talk to the people booking her trip. I can't imagine they haven't dealt with this scenario before.

She does not want to go alone as she's never been there before and never flown before (always drove when traveling).

It amazes me that there are grown adults who have never flown.

Find out the flight number, book the trip... When you board, ask if whoever you're sitting next to is alone and whichever one of you and you SO has a seat closer to the front, ask them to trade seats...

This isn't very difficult.

You can change your seats at anytime on Delta's website. Just find two open seats and buy the seat next to hers.

That's what I said. Now, she's thinking about wanting to drive it and see a bunch of sites along the way. What is there to see other than Memphis and St. Louis?

No. And frankly you could do without the stop in Memphis. I would definitely fly.

Nothing. Fly man. She may be aviophobic and not want to disclose that to you for whatever reason.

No.

If you're interested in American history, a visit to Springfield, IL is certainly worthwhile.

Memphis is dirty and pretty much one giant bad part of town.

I've made this drive dozens of times and I can say with certainty that there isn't a single tourist attraction worth stopping for. Jackson and Memphis are nasty and St. Louis area is a powder keg to be avoided right now. Springfield will add about 50 miles to your trip, not worth it IMO.

Amtrak out of Hammond will take you to Chicago overnight. If you've never traveled by train it may be an experience worth considering although it's more expensive than flying.

In my younger days I always drove non-stop but in recent years I split it into two days because night driving has become a problem. A good place to spend the night is Blytheville, AR, almost exactly half way. It's a college/Air Force town so it has some good restaurants and night life and is safe.
