I'm sure he has a jacket, and IMO, the kid was probably more than happy just with that..
..looks like mom wanted to give him a participation trophy.
...and this story is only a story due to the kid having Down's syndrome. If it was the 15th player sitting on the bench who never played because he sucked, the OT would be on the side of the school.

This shite is rich...I mean with this day and age with everyone screaming for equality ...But hey the kids white..Who gives a flying frick right?? Now if this were black...I'm sure most can draw their own conclusion
You realize that you're no better than people who turn every slight against a black person into a racial issue, when you try to turn stories like this into a racial issue?
You're doing the same thing that seems to upset you so much.

....and? You don't see the difference between a god given defect and a spoiled kid who wants a participation trophy?

Which is all a letter is to begin with.
"Hey you played!!!"
We went 1-9 but you played some!

I can see both sides of the argument. He was involved with a sports team, and obviously can't "earn" a varsity letter.
That being said, there are obvious extended circumstances here, and I know if special needs kids were involved with sports they would earn a letter.
The mom is being an entitled tPOS though, just assuming she can iron one on her kid's jacket without asking anyone.

quote:Yep. I am ok with this. And I bet if the mother would have calmly sat her son down and explained it, he would have taken it like a champ.
just because you are on the team doesn't mean you get a varsity letter for the sport you are playing.
Special needs or not.

nothing says "entitled thug POS" quite like tailoring clothing worn by high schoolers in order to make your special needs son happy.
what am I reading?!

It is a HS Varsity letter. They basically hand them out to HS seniors in a lot of sports.
Who gives a shite.
Who gives a shite.

I was coming in here to say this. Thank you for beating me to it.
For me its this + the whole trophy for just participating thing. We have to giving recognition when it isn't due.
I feel for the kid but the mother should not have just gone and bought a dmn varsity letter for her kid because he loves basket ball. She could have gotten him a different kind of patch at the very least instead of an official school letter

Why not? You think it diminishes the reward for the other kids? Because the school's disabled kid enjoys wearing his letter? Get over yourselves.
Look, the school should have a letterman program for the special needs students that participate in their special needs athletic programs. I don't think anyone is saying they shouldn't. Sounds like this would be a good opportunity to put one in place.
That being said, Mom should not have just gone out and bought one for her kid without even checking with the school.

This fricking right here!
In the words of Hillary Clinton...."What difference, at this point, does it make?"

lol at people in here acting like "the letter must be earned". It's a fricking HS varsity letter, not some prestigious rhodes-scholarship type honor.
If it makes the kid happy to wear it, then so be it, let him have his moment.
The people against something like this are probably the peaked in HS guys who still talk about their high school sport playing days.
Exactly this. Taking the letter away from a kid with Downs is just cruel.

its an iron on letter on a jacket. its not a fricking purple heart or congressional medal of honor. I guarantee there is nothing in that school's dress code about wearing a jacket with the school's letter on it without having earned it.

You mean by completely disregarding the school that's teaching her son? It's a fricking phone call, and she didn't even bother to do that, but the second the school said something she ran to the media.

"i know it's not fair and you had no control over being born with down syndrome but simply put you suck at basketball because you aren't normal"
"yeh mom i understand, thanks for clearing that up"

Perfectly said...although for some people, that's was their peak so they have to protect it like they won a gold medal
