I bought a Denon receiver last year and a good yamaha center channel and sub. I'm ready to replace the old crappy sony surround speakers in my ceiling. They are the little cubes hanging from brakets from the ceiling. Looking to spend $400-$500.
What are some good direct replacements?

I'll just sit back and read the responses as I am in the same boat as you. Not sure if I should get two towers and then the rest satellites or all satellites or what.

I don't have a good place for towers and I have a 18 month old. I'm limited to the ceiling

Ive been directed to Reddit for budget speakers. There is post on there providing good budget speakers (the 5.1 surround thread) . Some of those seem like they would fit your goal

I just purchased my new receiver and looking at budget speakers as well. Im leaning towards the pioneer andrew jones towers and center speaker

This has always been a very popular 5.1 setup under $500 ($299 now):

Energy Take Classic 5.1

Supposed to have good sound on the cheap. Might not fit the sony brackets, but you can make it work.

ETA - if you just need sattelites look at the Anthony Gallo Nucleus Micro SE.

I'd just buy the best pair of speakers I could for $500 and call it a day.

Well thanks for that genious insight. Cant believe I didn't think of that without having to start a thread asking what was the best set of speaker I could get for $500.

2 $250 speakers is better than 4 $125 ones is my point.

He is saying get rid of all your speakers except for a stereo pair, which is a good idea if you ONLY listen to music.

If you really enjoy movies and surround sound, then not so much.

No, I was saying spend the money on fronts and use everything else, maybe even moving what are now fronts to the back. Just looking at budget, a pair of $500 speakers should make a huge difference.

ETA: I think I got this thread confused with the receiver thread...where he was upgrading speakers next. I have no idea about satellite speakers. I've seen them placed up high in the corners of people's rooms.

You will want your speakers to match. What yamaha center do you have? Find the bookshelf speakers from that same line.

haven't heard that before.
Just looked and Yamaha doesn't offer anything I can hang from the ceiling like my current speakers. I was really wanting to do the same and avoid patching holes and recabling to another location

Typically voice matched speakers will give you the best results for surround sound. As the sound pans from one speaker to the next you don't want a change in tone or quality. But it sounds like you just want some new cubes to hang in a corner, can't really help you much with that.

A mismatched sub is not a big deal. Generally the receiver has a cross-over frequency and sends anything with a frequency below that to the sub instead of the individual speakers. So as a car drives from left to right, the frequencies above the cross-over will move from the left speaker to the right speaker, but the lower frequencies will all come from the sub.
