Like most such communities in GA and the south generally, it largely sucks unless you're old Augusta, in which case it's awesome.

Yes. You do not want to live in Augusta. There are surrounding areas that aren't bad, but actually living IN augusta is not really preferred if you can help it. It's not like the whole city is Augusta National. I believe they used to (not sure if they still do) have a pretty heavy gypsy population, for some reason.

I lived in Martinez for 4 years. Look in Columbia county, not richmond.

Columbia County. Everything else mostly sucks (the SC side included)

ETA: And don't get me wrong, it's not devoid of stuff to do and places to eat/drink/shop but Columbia Co. is clearly the best part of that area (schools and all).

So this may be actually happening.

So I'll bump this in hopes of some more advice.

From what I've seen

Where to look on Sc side
Aiken
North Augusta

On ga side.
Martinez
Evans

Any other suggestions??

North Augusta just got the OK to build a new baseball stadium and commercial development on the river. I think that area is about to start hopping.

Augusta national is buying up as much adjacent property as possible to get the city away from it. Should tell you all you need to know

Where will you be working? Small commute ok ? You looking for rural or in town ? To the south is Burke Co , which is reminiscent of the Mississippi Delta, but a nice community all in all. Lots of big farms and a nuclear plant on the Savannah River. Columbia Co is the white rural suburban homestead.Martinez and Harlem are fairly nice small towns. Jefferson Co is Burke Co with less money. If it were me ,I'd look at the Waynesboro are . Farming community to the south with a handsome downtown and a good tax base. Small commute (30 or less) but probably worth it from my experience. I've got a farm near there so I'm very familiar with it. Good private school (Edmund Burke Academy ) if you've got kids.
