Rick Pitino: Let high school kids turn pro, one year of education is pointless

Pitino added: "Now, I'm different than, probably, the coach of Kentucky, who is having so much success with that.
The current rules -- that a player must be 19 years old to enter the NBA draft -- could change once the NBA and National Basketball Players Association enter negotiations for the next collective bargaining agreement in 2017. Commissioner Adam Silver has said that he is in favor of an age limit of 20 years old for potential draftees.
Pitino disagrees with the age limit, which essentially forces elite athletes to attend college for a season or compete overseas for a year if they desire advanced competition.
"College is not for everybody," Pitino said. "So if a kid doesn't want to go to college, let him go to the pros. Let him go into the [D-League]. And if someone does want to go to college, let them go. We're still going to have great basketball teams.

Wonder if he felt that way when Sebastian Telfair fricked him over by committing, signing a shoe deal, and effectively steering Rajon Rondo to UK.

Not only is one year of education pointless but a waste of time and money. That's why NBA 1st round draftees have such a low quality and impact rate, unlike the NFL. They need to adopt the NFL's draft requirements.

he's right, the NBA is the only one benefiting.
NBA got the NCAA to screw the kids, so they could get another year of development, that they wouldnt have to pay for.
They need to starting giving the pro leagues the middle finger. kids can go as soon as they want.
Let the ingrate kids and pro leagues deal with the mess.

no shite, NCAA needs to force the leagues hands. why should they take the brunt of obannon case, when the pro leagues are the one taking advantage of the kids and colleges.
leagues need the colleges to develop kids, not the other way around
some very smart lawyers out there, one needs to find a way to force the leagues hands, with players and ncaa backing.

The problem is the NBA is so elite and few players have careers at all. It would be better to save these immature kids from themselves than to let them waste a potential better life after basketball.
There is nothing wrong with a business requiring some type of education before hiring an employee.
The only other solution is to create a better minor league system.
College basketball is such an inferior product anyways it only benefits the NCAA getting this talent to go to college first.

It is really rare for guys who leave early to go undrafted.
And if they don't they can go play in the dleague or go make a bunch of money overseas.
Seriously I don't think it is a coincidence that this has suddenly become an issue when Kentucky is undefeated. Crazy how the narrative changes. When UK had fallen apart last season everyone was laughing at Cal because of the NIT and how they looked destined for a early exit from the NCAA tournament, now suddenly it is issue.
I am gonna stick with enjoying watching high level NBA caliber talent play CBB. Don't understand not wanting to see these guys play.

The NBA has gone back and forth and forth and back on this issue. It was less than 10 years ago that HS players could throw their name into the NBA draft hat. Prior to that (30 years ago) it was also true.
NBA looks at NFL and thinks, let's do that. Farm system.
You want a farm system, then pay them, or start your own system. Player is 18, college isn't his thing, make him wait a year, become 19, sit out a year, then he's okay? Okay. Sounds like collusion to me.
