Riding lawnmowers- what does the OT use?

We've got a yard guy ($45-50 every 2 weeks), but I'm tired of paying for it when I could put the $$$ toward buying my own rig. I'm looking to pay ~$1200-1600+ and have seen a number of different brands/models in this range. I'm looking for a hydrostatic v twin model with a 42" cut.
Guy that cuts my hair said his Craftsman (I think) is good, but I've heard mixed reviews. The FIL has an older John Deere (not vtwin or hydrostatic), but swears by it. What's a Snapper run price-wise?
TIA
ETA: I don't shop at the mall very often, but has there been a faster decline in malls than the MOL? When does the BR area get a new "good" mall?

I use a push reel mower on my 5 acre lot like a real man. Hope you can live with yourself and your laziness.

JD 280 48 in cut. Paid $4200 10 or 12 years ago.Never been to the shop. On the 2nd battery. This series was not the series you can buy at Lowes which are of much poorer quality

Anything with a heavy duty Briggs and Stratton motor will do just fine. I have a 20 hp Craftsman which has been great for the past 10 years. It is still like new.

John Deere commercial grade zero turn. Not the stuff you will get at Lowes.

Craftsman mowers are horrible all the way around. Stay away from them at all costs.

My little John Deere D110 serves me well

Cub Cadet with a 54" deck and. 23 HP Kohler. Gets it done.

If you go zero turn, make the price jump and go commercial. Residential is junk and it's still fairly expensive.

I have a JD. I think the model is la 115. I've had it for about 7 years and have never had a problem with it. I've very happy with it.
