They seem to bite well on steel.

My man! That's the kind of stuff I'm looking for.

You basically described my game plan to a tee. Chum will be floated away from the yak with light mono in case the tax man cometh. Main lines will be 50 lb braid/60 lb fluoro leader. 6-9/0 2x offset circles. As far as the gaff, he'll get a lip gaff to bring his head up. The ball ping will remove and greenness he has left. I don't want him hulking out in my lap.

If all goes well, yall will have a video of it. And if anything interesting happens, you'll see that too

I've always just done sight casting for them in both Fl and LA. They cruise along out there. You just gotta be looking.

Hard to see them when you're a foot off the water.

forgot u were in yak. hate to tell u this but that chum brings in sharks too. be careful. I might bring a little pistol with me just in case u get into trouble or need to land a big cobia the old fashion way. lol

It should be noted that I won't be anchoring to chum unless conditions are perfect. As far as sharks, they're part of it. I'll be taking extra care to separate myself from the chum.

It can be done in the right conditions, you just have to use some common sense. Ie don't use rope to tie the block to the kayak, float it away from the boat. If jaws does come to visit, he'll just take the block and not capsize you.

I would be leery of dragging a big Cobia into my yak as well. Hell, I'm leery of pulling one into any boat. They are "energetic" fish when you first land them.

How on God's green earth do you plan to pull a ling into a kayak?

It can be done. It's not impossible. Tire the hell out of the fish and then gaff him by the mouth and pull him In between your legs. Then a small bat finishes him off. Depending on what kayak you have there are some standing platforms that can be applied to kayaks. They raise you up four feet above your yak and standing gets you about 10 feet over the yak for sight casting!

It's a fairly simple process... You pull.

Link?

Sitting in the Gulf over a chum slick is not where I would want to try this.

Yeah, no way on that one. I'll stand up if it's a really calm day, but not putting a platform on a trident.

I have been out there on a day where I would have tried it. Totally calm, we were chumming up Mangrove and Cubera under the boat. I had no problem standing, and would have used a platform. I've also been out there in seas that were big enough that you couldn't see out of the troughs. I had to put my seat on the lowest position.

Doesn't matter what kind of boat you're in. When you turn your head and the o my direction you don't see water is straight up, it's a bad feeling
