I am sure that that group or one very similar can hold their own against a number of teams in the SEC, especially when playing against the other team's bench. It was only about a month ago against Texas A&M that Gray, Malone, and Bridgewater brought us back from an 8 point first half deficit. All in about 5 minutes of play.

In the few minutes they get, we rarely lose ground when the subs are in, and even if we fell back 2 or 3 buckets it is worth it to give your best players a rest.

ETA: In the very early part of last season, Odo and Malone got in together as a second unit a bunch and the team played very well. But that went away after a few games. Don't know why since the seemed to play to each other's strengths together. Malone is a better offensive player and Odo is a stronger defender and rebounder. Yet you still had 2 7-footers on the floor which obviously played well for the defense as a whole.

Bc an NBA team has depth, not very many NBA players play a full game. If they do I promise you by the middle or end of a season they are either hurt or not playing at 100%. If M and M stay I promise you they would look much better next year with some depth. They aren't ready for the NBA imo but they are damn good college players and both have great stats. Sometimes guys have off games, happens to the best players. When you have someone to come in and replace them it wouldn't be such a big deal but we don't yet.

Really?? Then explain to me how the hell LSU played toe to toe with Kentucky and beat WV away if it's such a lyricist statement that they are as good as it gets? They are two of the best tandems in the country and much better than anything we have had in a good while. They need to work on their game but they are still very good players. The problenm is beyond those two we are average or very young. It's not that hard to focus a defense on 2 guys and teams still can't contain them.

Do we have "elite" talent with the likes of UK, Duke, etc.? Hell no. But do we have sufficient talent to where we shouldn't be scratching and clawing for a chance to sneak in the tourney right now? Hell no.

I think on the second one you were supposed to say "Hell yea."

this game went a long way towards putting this question to rest. win at ark without mickey. ark has been the clear #2, 2nd most consistent team all season. only lost once at home in 18 games.

juco national scoring leader comes off the bench. aaron epps with valuable playing time. even malone made a few plays.

this team has as much talent as anybody in the conference except ky. they haven't played consistently so, the question is whether or not it's on the players or the coaches.

4 out of 5 played solid for us today. Odo probably could have helped as well.

So the answer is: YES. We can use our bench in games!!!!!!!

For what he had to work with I think Johnny has done a good job.

Absolutely no excuse to have as many horrible losses as we've had this year. Tennessee may be the worst of all considering what was on the line, how we beat Tenn. just a few weeks ago and the mystifying lack of effort/intensity we displayed.
Actually, the Tennessee game is a good indication that the OP is correct; we have zero depth and it shows.

We embarrassed Tennessee a couple weeks ago, so they were very fired up to play us again. Now, go look at Kentucky's close games (us, UGA, Ole Miss, A&M etc). When teams are pumped against Ky, and sometimes when their starters are slacking, they fall behind. Then they trot out another 5 guys just as good (and hungry to play), and they grind the other team down, and win.

Go back to our Tennessee disaster- our starters were flat (or hurt-take your pick). We were in a fight, just like Ky; but with no depth, it was starters or nobody for LSU. We did get Tennessee tired late, but our team was also tired and couldn't close.

Better depth, and LSU wins that game. Tennessee's star player was sucking wind and Quarterman was giving him fits on defense late... but we were too gassed to make a run.

this is completely false yet continues to be repeated because jones chooses not to play them

Amazing that someone would say this after we beat a better team with one of our best players out for the entire game.

Amazing!!! I don't know much about basketball but how is it I can see what the heck is going on and all these experts in this thread can't.

LSU is much deeper than we have been. We have had some real stars the last 15 years. But it has almost always been that we have two people on the court that can score and three that almost never score... until JJ got hold of recruiting.

If our best two when TJ was here had an off night, we were completely doomed. Today we have something like 8 players that are legit scoring threats. Our starting 5 (which has changed, so 7 guys) all have the ability put points on the board.

This team is solid without horrible glaring weaknesses at any position and backups that don't suck.

no shite but there's 84 or so games a year not to mention these kids are maybe 20 yrs old and their tired??

The NBA game is also 8 min longer than a college game, which means Lebron is on the bench for 8 additional basketball minutes (which probably works out to about 20 actual minutes) per game. That's a substantial difference in the amount of time a player is on the bench resting. Martin and Mickey are playing 37-38 minutes out of 40 total minutes. Lebron is playing 36 out of 48 minutes. That's a big difference.

Great teams at LSU have always had "role players", and I see that on this team.

Q-man: defensive stopper up high
Hornsby: money shot
Gray: press breaker, play maker (I hope)
Mickey: shot blocker, scorer
Martin: stopper down low, everything else
Patterson: clutch scorer

LSU has two guys who could leave after this year and start cashing NBA checks.
Even if that aren't drafted they'll make a roster.

Hornsby will probably be able to make a living over seas.

Gray (as of late), Patterson, and TQ are all above average players in the league.

This. I hate this mindset. But it is 100% true about how LSU fans think.

That's true of a lot of fans, and it's been that way as long as I can remember. But I don't think it's unique to LSU, really. You see it with most fan bases.
