Question for UBER drivers

I have 3k to pay off my car, so I was thinking I would become an Uber driver so I could pay the car off this year...
So, I call my insurance to ask about how that works (since I work in the industry, i know there are all sorts of exclusion policies for using a vehicle for job purposes)
So USAA tells me that there is no way under any circumstances for me to be covered once I sign into my Uber app as a driver. I can not buy gap insurance. And, I can not purchase a policy. Any other drivers know what to do in this scenario. or is everyone just driving around at 2 am ... not insured? Was wondering if I could get a policy with another carrier for this scenario.

Have you asked Uber about this?

You're going to have to purchase what is called a "hybrid insurance". I don't know if it's available in all 50 states (doubtful it's available in this state). Hybrid insurance from what I hear is pretty expensive, so you'd may have to find what is affordable for you. If you still want to be a driver, just be careful to not get in a wreck, or get a ticket.

It's well known Uber operates illegally. You really thought the drivers were insured ?

Like mentioned in the links posted you're covered under Uber's insurance when you're active or have passengers. I'm unsure how much of a pain in the arse it would be to file an actual claim though.
Is this where you're going to be driving? Uber is relatively new here and I actually started the process of signing up to see if it's worth my time. I haven't checked at night but it doesn't seem like there's usually more than 2-3 cars available. I'm wondering if it might be a good way to pickup some side $$.

Why would you even tell them? What's to say that you weren't just out "driving a friend home"?
They won't know what you don't tell them.
Fact.

I have heard of stories of people actually getting screwed by that James River insurance company. One in particular could not get help with a claim from that company without a claims number. Funny thing is that he was never given a claims number to begin with.

It's becoming less and less of a good deal from what I read.
Drivers make about $10 or so an hour.
My last 2-3 Uber trips have kinda sucked, TBH.
Ac was broke in one car, guy couldn't get us to the destination, etc..
So pretty much equal to taxis.

Covered by Uber insurance.
Also you can sue the driver and get paid that way I would guess.
