Cap Update

With all the potential moves floating about I figured it's a good time for a cap update.
We are still officially about $20 mil over so this is going to take into account all of the potential moves. I'll just list the moves now and break them down later.
Cut Thomas and Evans
Trade Lofton and Galette
Restructure Colston (assuming it isn't a pay cut and is a full restructure
Converting Byrd and Graham's roster bonuses
This would put us at $10.5 mil under with some other potential moves to be made (such as cutting Bunkley and Hawthorne).

I was literally going to start a post asking for your current thought.
Thanks!

You must have missed the news that they were about to cut him when his agent reached out to discuss a pay cut instead. Since the pay cut hasn't been announced I'm going under that assumption that a cut is more likely right now.
Edit:
No problem.

Are you taking into consideration that our cap number is actually $145.92 because of our rollover from last year?

I used over over cap which has it at $144.5 mil, so we're within a mil and a half.
If these moves all happen we should have at least around $10 mil in space, which is plenty enough to get a CB and resign Ingram (which is i think are there first two goals).
Depending on structure and other moves we could also sign 2-3 more impact FAs.

Since some people like numbers: Currently - 166.935mil
Cutting Thomas and Evans: Saves 7.7mil
Trade Lofton and Galette: Saves 16.0mil
Pay Cut Colston: Saves 3mil (guessing now: it saves 4.3mil cutting him, 6.9mil base salary)
Converting Byrd/Graham: Saves 10.574mil
Puts us at: 129.661mil (the calculator is a tad bit off iirc)
Players that we can still deal with:
- Bunkley (2.9mil)
- Hawthorne (3.0mil)
- Bush (1.95mil)
- Watson (1.5mil)
- White (1.5mil)
That would put us at: 118.811mil (25.72mil under the cap).
Holes without a starter from last year before FA/Draft:
DE/OLB (Galette), DT (Bunkley), ILB (Lofton), OLB (Hawthorne), ROG (Evans), C (Goodwin), and RB (Ingram)
QB - Brees
RB - Robinson
WR - Colston, Cooks, Stills, Toon
TE - Graham, Hill
OT - Armstead, Strief
OG - Grubbs
C - Lelito
DE - Jordan
DT - Hicks, Jenkins
OLB - Haralson, Humber
ILB - Nobody...? hahahaha
CB - Lewis, SJB, Frederick,
S - Byrd, Vaccaro, bunch of randoms

The calculator adds back in the players taking over the released/traded player's spot in the top 51.
So for each player we lose you have to take off about half a mil. So Thomas actually only saved 1.25 mil because someone took his spot in the top 51.

I know that part, but I'm using hard cap gain numbers since I'm 100% sure we are going to have players that cost more than the minimum.
Get where I'm coming from?
Either way, the calculation I did was slightly off as it'd be 123.127mil (21.403mil cap space) if we don't add anyone

Gotcha. Just wasn't sure where you meant it was off from.
I know I always forget about the replacement when talking about it.

That way makes more sense. Any key FA is just going to push the new 51st highest paid player right back out of cap consideration.

Looking at it though, if we cut all those players, we'd actually still have quality depth.
Posted on 3/4/15 at 7:37 pm to bonethug0108
I hope we don't spend all our money on one guy if we make all these cuts. Signing Byrd for 10 mil last year wasn't smart
Posted on 3/4/15 at 7:47 pm to Tigerfan_95
Geezus we are making serious cuts.
Brees needs to be a fricking team player and take a restructure as well

What would the difference in cap space saved be if we cut Gallette rather than trade him..?
Posted on 3/4/15 at 7:56 pm to Rand AlThor
It wouldn't be smart cap wise
Posted on 3/4/15 at 7:59 pm to Rand AlThor
We cannot afford to cut Galette due to guarantees (which the new team takes on if traded). Not talking about signing bonus though as we are hooked for that.
Basically we save $11.75 mil if he's traded, $10 mil if we convert his bonus, and we lose $750 k if he's cut.
So cutting is not an option. He has to be traded before FA starts or we are stuck with him.

No team is going to trade for Galette with that bonus coming.
