Spinoff from the Manning thread.
Who is still somewhat in their prime.
It seems like with salaries and endorsement deals we would have seen someone do this by now. At some point you have to think that winning a chapmpionship has to be more important than making another 10 million, at least when you are worth 100 or 200 million. Its the one thing they can't buy.
Do you think its pressure from their unions because when one does it then teams will pressure other to do the same?

i honestly think that the respective players' union would try to block such a selfless maneuver

The only thing is in salary cap leagues they also have to spend a certain amount, so the money is going to players no matter what.

Never. No guarantee they win a championship.

hell, how about a prime player take a contract 1/2 of the franchise number (NFL) or 1/2 max deal (NBA)

Karl Malone, Gary Payton, Ray Allen went for dirt cheap, but they were title chasing at 35+.

Aren't there rules in play essentially prohibiting such a thing? If not, certainly the player's union would have a fit if a star tried to do so.

Jordan wasn't chasing a championship, but didn't he donate his salary when playing for the Wizards to 911 relief?

In 94 the Saints offered Deion Sanders some obscene contract for the time, like $5 million a year, and instead he signed a 1 year contract with the 49ers for less than a million (and a bunch of bullshite performance bonuses that any NFL player with a pulse could have gotten).
And he got his ring. And got another one the next year when he signed with the Cowboys.

He's not a star but Amare Stoudemire is currently playing with a vet minimum salary.

This is fairly unlikely because of how quickly you can become irrelevant with a career ending injury. You see variations of it with players reducing their salaries significantly for the current year to accommodate other signings, but in almost all cases they are just deferring money that is guaranteed anyways.

Didn't Rickey Jackson do that when he left the Saints for the 49ers?

Tim Duncan?
Was he ever truly maxed out?

Never the union won't allow it

Remind me how the union would disallow it?
