Pheasant hunting gauge?

I've been invited on a pheasant hunt in South Dakota this fall, which is a good excuse to buy a new shotgun.
What gauge do you use for these hardy birds?
12, 16, 20?
I've got my eye on a Belgium Browning A5 Sweet Sixteen right now... always wanted one.

Some days a 28 is more than you need when they are flushing in your face, others you go 12. If it were me, and I was looking for an excuse I would go with what I was wanting...for me it would be a Benelli Montefeltro 20 ga

My dad had an extremely nice 5 serial number Magnum 12 when I was growing up and that was my first duck gun. My brother put it in his basement a few years ago and it completely rusted.
I'm looking at 1950's-60's models.
One day I'd like to own one of each from 28-12, lights and magnums. I figure now is as good a time as any to start.

I used a 20 the couple of times I went. My uncle goes often and he uses a Benelli Ultralight 28 gauge, he claims it is the best.

The 20ga Benelli Cordoba is the best auto gun for birds on the market.
I like the old A5, but it will feel like a boat anchor after lugging it around all day long in the field.

IMO a 12 is better w/ flushing dogs as birds are a little farther out and a 20 is plenty w/ pointing hounds. If you are a blocker bring a 12. Have fun I hope to go next fall too

20. As always, your kill to miss ratio is directly related to shot placement.

I have a Sweet 16 and I shoot it regularly. That would be a good gun, but you really have to not mind the kick if you going to shoot a lot. If your not into the recoil, hard to beat a Beretta AL391 or A400 in 20G.

If you are hunting over Dogs get a 20. Shoot light magnums in 5 or 6. I use a 28 and shoot win mags 1oz 5 and have no issues MOST of the time. You will want to throw that 16 into the weeds as they kick like a 12 and weigh the same. Weight is the issue as you might walk 5-6 miles in the AM.
You need dogs as if you shoot one far off you won't ever find it.
20 ga is plenty even for 40 yard shots, they ain't that tough really.

Texan is right they are not tough compared to ducks but if you can shoot the legs too ;) if you wing one they can run forever .........
