I am a morning person by nature, but the long days meant we all didn't get back to our apartment until usually after 10 pm. After a shower, some story telling, unwiding, etc it was midnight like that.

It just about killed any of our "nightlife" plans we had. We did have some schedule nights where we had specific reservations and such, but other than that it was just so late by the time we got back. The first night we were there Phoenix was actually playing in concert and I had a line on some tickets from a family friend, but the concert didn't start till like midnight.

It was one of the tougher adjustments. Well, that and not being able to find good american coffee near our apartment until halfway through our trip.

I lucked out and found cupcakery that was owned by americans (although staffed by Parisians) and they had fresh american coffee for us every morning.

Do a fat tire bike tour! I did the night tour and it ends on a seine river cruise with some bad wine. The views of the eiffel can't be beat at night! It's gorgeous.

Paris is a beautiful and charming city. I loved it. It's expensive for sure. The louvre was very cool but I'm not big into art, so we went to see the Mona Lisa. The arc de triomphe was beautiful as well.

I didn't find the city to be smelly. The people were very friendly and I didn't speak any French besides bonjour and aurevoir. They were super helpful and actually walked me in the direction that I needed to go. It's what you make of it I suppose.

You should check out barcelona though. That was my favorite city when I went on my Europe trip last year.

Istanbul

Cut some time from Italy and go to Istanbul. It is a great place and very unique. The city is beautiful and full of awesome places to see. The Hagia Sopia is worth the trip.

3 days in Paris is a good amount for a first visit and will leave you wanting more. Like others have said-Louvre and d'orsay are the museums I liked the most....Notre Dame and Mt St Michael...Ste. Chapelle was pretty stunning and not as well known. Spare time to hang out in les jardins and place du vosges. Arc and Tower...use the Metro to get around.

Just like a visit to the French Quarter, have a loose itinerary but leave lots of time for things to just happen.

If anything, I was thinking of cutting out some time in Spain I really want to see a lot of Italy and Croatia. But you are gonna have to do better than saying one place if you are gonna sell me on Istanbul

That would be foolish, because Spain is a fantastic country. Madrid is easily one of my top 3 favorite places that I've visited. Barcelona is fantastic too. It's also very reasonably priced for western Europe.

I'd like to back other posters who mentioned Fat Tire Bike Tours. I have not done their Paris tour, but did a tour with them in Barcelona and loved it. Paris is nice, but it's a big city. I just personally think there are better places to see in Europe. I'm actually headed to Lyon, Marseilles, and Bordeaux in a couple of months. Renting a car and driving through the south of France.

London, Paris, Berlin, Barcelona right off the top of my head, Spain is an awesome place and one of the few places in Europe where the USD is reasonably strong, the bike tour is fun, maybe a tad overrated by some, now I just prefer the river boat tours

I'm actually going to Istanbul this year, so I can't tell you why you should go from a "been there" perspective, but I'm extremely excited. We're doing a taste of two continents tour that is a food tour of both the euro and asia sides of Istanbul, and you get to ferry across the Bosphorus. I'm looking forward to stepping foot in Asia and crossing another continent off my list.

Fat Tire isn't everywhere, but here's their website LINK

I can only speak for my experience with Fat Tire in Barcelona, but my tour guide was so energetic and had an enthusiastic way of telling us the history behind the various historical sites we visited. It was just overall a really great bike tour.

Skip Versailles. It's uber touristy and there are people EVERYWHERE. I wouldn't go back and was pissed I spent the day.

Also seems very unauthentic. Reminds me of Disney. Looks how they thought people think it should look, not like real place.

I had fun at Versailles. It was near the end of our backpacking trip and we just took naps in the shade by the lake. Didn't even go inside.

There is some place there where the naked ladies dance and there used to be a hole in the wall where you could see it all but IDK if it is still there.

If you have time, rent a car and head to the coast. My favorite town I visited was st malo, which is a beautiful medieval town on the English Channel.

Also, mont st Michel is awesome, but touristy- go early in the day if you go.

All the little beach towns along the coast are awesome. Honfleur, etc.

Rouen is a cool day trip. Enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. Sweet architecture and interesting little local places (black plague museum, etc).

Also, the best ruin I went to in that part of France was abbaye de jumieges, but it's off the beaten path.
