Girlfriend attacked by a pittbull

My gf lives on a large piece of property out in the country with a very long driveway. At the end of the driveway she has a locked gate that she needed to get out of her car to unlock this afternoon. While unlocking the gate, a pitt came out of nowhere chasing her back into her car while getting a nice bite in her backside. The dog made his way into the yard.
She called the police and they sent out three units. The sheriff tried getting the dog out of her yard by pepper spraying it. Finally they got him out without shooting him but told her if he comes back in the yard she has "permission to kill."

She had permission the minute it growled at her. That's the way I understand LA law anyway.

She fully expected them to shoot it. The sheriff word for word said "I don't feel comfortable killing it, but if he comes back you have permission to kill it."
