....easily 50% of the street musicians are of that brand of young, unwashed, unkempt carny folks playing that old-timey vaudevillian folk music.

I've noticed these vagabonds before, but it seems they've now infested the FQ. They're like their own sub-class of human. It's like they're casting rejects from Oliver Twist.

Do these people suck? Or am I being too get-off-my-lawnish?

Hell no. It's the white kids, who literally haven't washed their hair in weeks, wearing vests and cobbled shoes and tweed knickerbockers, and whatnot.

They play washboards and fiddles and stuff.

If they were good, then perhaps. But I don't know why it has to be one or the other.

I'm just commenting on how there used to be quite a variety of music being played on the streets in the Quarter. Now it's a bunch of extras from the Chili Peppers' "Soul To Squeeze" video.

referring to them as subhuman or lower class human leads me to say the answer to

They've been down there for years. I agree the gutter punk problem has worsened, but I don't mind themz kids clawing on the banjo and mandolin all day, as long as they're not harrassing tourists for beer money. If you spend time down there you'll notice who hangs with whom and which ones are mixed up in the hard dope. A few of the musically inclined groups are pretty impressive, especially some of the rouses supermarket hangers. The late night Frenchman dope heads are pretty obnoxious- or at least the side-show crew that bums the stoop with them. Love this city, even the transient train hoppers.

Nothing wrong with those guys. Much cleaner and much more talented than the multiple groups of frickups I saw Saturday.

Have none of y'all heard of folk punk?

Is this what they looked like?

It's winter, which always ups the population of gutter punks in the FQ. They'll move in the spring.

The WTO clearly needs to host some more meetings in the US to give these kids something to do with their time.

#Occupy the French Quarter just doesn't have the same passion behind it.

Found this on youtube.

I actually really like this song. And it's well done. The frickers out there this past weekend were fricking evil looking versions of this. Really druggy looking. Really dirty. REALLY dirty.
