No. Not much on S. Congress accept a few dive bars and the continental club. Its cool on 1st thursdays of the month. Its a monthly street party. So.. You have a good plan.

Appreciate the help. We are arriving this Thursday so we may check that out. Although it's supposed to be cold as shite and the prospect of hanging out outside all night isn't the most appealing thought.

I have dinner planned at Bangers that Thursday night. Read nothing but good things about that place.

Amazing Moves seems to be in the know, I'd listen to him and LB. I wouldn't worry about embarrassing a college student. Most of the places I've been have had people of all ages. But I'm probably closer to your age than your cool college companion so I'm not sure what the younger bars might be like. Hope y'all have a good time, that's definitely one of my favorite cities and this thread has me wanting to go back right now.

Yeah, I think she'll have a good time.

I just didn't want to take her to a Fred's type place where no one is over 25.

that country bar and the surrounding area you suggested were a blast

The White Horse? I love that place. They have whiskey on tap.

The owners recently opened a new bar in the same general area...it's called Stay Gold. I hit it up a few weeks ago for HH and the staff was great and they had some solid drink specials. I liked the music a lot, too. Drinks across the street has a bartender who can make a pretty good Old Fashioned. E 6th (east of I-35) is always my choice to go out. Cheap drinks, less crowded, less pretentious, free and easy parking.

No. I would bet there is a 99% ratio of longhorns at Oil Cans. The longhorns made a movie about it...

hilarious trailer

Point proven? I think so.

That's it, excellent music and the whiskey on tap was a nice touch.

But that whole area was great for bar hopping, for OP and Vette I'd recommend it.

The entire East Side is different. Very cool places. Unique. Too much to recommend.

Shangri La
The Brixton
Violet Crown
Gypsy Lounge
White Horse (as mentioned and probably the best)

to name a few.

If you're referring to gay things, I think that happens on 4th street.

Rainey

I'm real excited for Rainey. The only thing I'm worried about is the cold weather. Most of the Rainey bars seem more suited for outdoor drinking.

Rainey has a couple of cool spots. The aforementioned Banger's has an excellent craft beer selection (around 102 taps, I believe), as does Craft Pride (mostly TX brews). G'raj Mahal is my very favorite Indian food. Blackheart was named one of the top whiskey bars in the country. Andrew is a bad arse bartender and knows his shite.

Rainey Street is great. Very nice looking scenery. Completely approachable. If its like it has been in Texas lately.. cold, wet and dreary it will be dead. Its thrives on nice weather. Have a back up plan in place. Like The East Side or West 6th. Warehouse district has a few good ones.

So, the only things people recommend to do in austin are to drink and kayak on Lady Bird lake?

Can't believe no one has mentioned Jack Allens Kitchen. It is seriously awesome.

Do a morning run and take a dip in Barton Springs. Legit hangover cure.

Taco Deli is good too.

Gotta go to Stubbs if you've never been

Speaking of the movie "Longhorns" (which wasn't made "by Longhorns"):

quote:

In a film about a frat boys at University of Texas in Austin, they often played college marching band music in the background. However, several of the pieces played had nothing to do with University of Texas, but instead were several songs from Louisiana State University, including the LSU fight song.

This, I did not know.

Jess Special + potatoes + Dona sauce

BBQ at Stubb's is mediocre at best but seeing a show there is always a good time.
